Runway Lengths

what airplane has the shortest runway length in terms to its size? also which has the shorter runway length b744 or a340? also what airplane no matter what size(but larger than 30 seats) has the shortest runway lenght? thanks in advance

It all depends on how heavy the aircraft is, what the temperature is and what the airport altitude is. As for the A/C with the shortest length, the Dash 7 would have to be right up there with it's STOL capabilities. The Hercules military transport with JATO would definately be there for short takeoffs but that's an oddball case.

The L-1011 could take off fully loaded in 8,070 feet. The others in its class at the time, the DC-10 and 747, needed 10,370 feet and 10,450 feet, respectively.

The shortest field length for any large jet is the C-17's 3000 or so feet. The C-17 is a USAF transport of approximate weight of the DC-10.

I flew from Long Beach to Phoenix on an A319 with only 3 pax on board. We had a 10 knot headwind which made that plane lift off in approimately 1500 feet! By far it was the shortest I've ever seen.
