Concerning your questions about UA's DUS flight, I don't know for sure about its profiatability but I guess it must be alright as it has been running since the mid 90s. Just look at UA's destinations in Europe, the number is less than AA's, DL's and CO's. UA does not serve routes just because of prestige, it's all about money for them. If DUS wasn't profitable, UA would not serve it! The LH code-share is one factor for the flight being successful but it's not the only one. CO, for example, has a flight to EWR is competition to LH and it works without a hub is DUS. Even though not being as big as other cities like MUC, DUS is located in the most densly populated German state of Northrhein-Westphalia (more than 15Mio. people), so the flight gets passengers from many towns besides DUS. I would not support your suggestion to move the UA flight to MUC because LH and UA already have flights from MUC to EWR, IAD, ORD, SFO and LAX(starting next summer) so there is no need for another UA service to ORD. Just my thoughts.
