That is a good question I was wondering myself. I bet that a lot of you don't know (or maybe you do) that Israel is an important country that produces high-tech electronics. Both for computers that are used for every day life purposes and high tech military procedures. The USAF send a lot of it's F-15/16s to the IAF (Israeli Air Force) to update it with new equipment that they specially design. Only problem is that since Israel gets so much economic funding from the US (and not from many other sources, (except for philanthropic Jews around the world) that they have to get permission to sell things from the US. For example earlier this year they wanted to sell something that was some sort of anti aircraft gun. They were denied privaleges to sell it to China but the US allowed them to sell it to Taiwan. The same goes for them buying airbus aircraft. The US won't allow them to buy from any other company besides Boeing, McDonell Douglas, Lockheed, Raytheon etc, the US threatened to stop supporting them financially when some sort of press was realeased about them interested in I think the A320, but I guess the US govt has the right. But I'm off subject now... sorry. Japan is also a huge technology capital, as is Taiwan. Maybe a continuation on their 742 Hong Kong flight to Taipei would be a good idea. And isn't Osaka more of the technology capital rather than Tokyo (Although Tokyo is a lot bigger). Maybe they'd go there instead. Maybe if they did that it would be a good time to start leasing one of the World Airlines MD-11s again, huh?
I agree with your question dellatorre, please fill us in if anyone has specific info. Thanks!

Woohoo!! I'm off to Japan next year. Whilst I have not researched the situation as regards why EL AL doesn't serve Japan (in all probability NRT), I do know that Egyptair serves NRT twice-weekly, using the 777.

According to an article in 'TIME' magazine in the early 90's EL AL was going to initiate a service to Tokyo, why didnt they?

Simple as this, I don't believe that EL AL has any planes with the range to fly that route. I could be wrong though.

On the asian continent El Al serves Tel Aviv (duh!), Amman, Tashkent, Delhi, Bombay/Mumbai, Hong Kong, Beijing and Beijing. I do believe that they do have the range to fly to Tokyo if they can make it to Beijing. Or maybe a 1 stop would be an idea. Their 747s should be able to go the distance and maybe the 767s aswell. Hey SAS can do it...

By the way just for info El Als services to Asia are on the following aircraft:
Bombay:767-200
Beijing: 767-200
Hong Kong: 747-200
Bangkok: 747-200
New Delhi and Tashkent I think are no longer serviced.
The flights to Amman are on 737-200s

All of these flights are non-stop.

Sorry that none of my posts have gotten you an answer to your question Dellatorre

Isn't the problem that EL AL planes can not fly over most of the territory in the middle east. Their flights to S and SE Asia go south over the red sea and then up over the Indian Ocean. And the flights to PEK and tashkent go nw over greece and then head east iver the black sea to their destination. Perhaps due to this circuitious routing they don't have aircraft with both proper range and capacity.

Thats possible, I don't believe Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and Syria are all that excited about having Israeli planes in their midst....

BTW: Where is Tashkent?

El Al still serves Tashkent. They have a comprehensive code-sharing agreement with Uzbekistan Airlines, and I think they might own a percentage of the carrier (No joke).

Uzbekistan visits JFK every so often with 767-300ERs and A310s. Can't be that backward of an airline.

Where do they refuel in Europe?

TAS's great; a Russian paradise!!

Perhaps I'll save up and visit a range of CIS countries, eg Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, etc. Fascinatingly interesting!

Just a thing about "no Jews in Japan..." It's almost an understatement to say that there are no Jews in most countries (accept many of the Arab nations). After WWII, after Hitler's reign of terror the Jews of Germany and other European countries fled to wherever they could get to. That's the only reason that there are Jewish populations in Eastern Asian, Australiasian, and Latin American countries. Jews in places in Northern Africa and N. America (like myself) we can thank the Spanish/Portugeese Inquisitions and the Russian Czarsist leaders. So the reasons of El Al not flying somewhere most likely does not have to do with how many Jews live there.
BTW, I can ask my Physics teacher who was an engineer that worked for El Al a few years back about this topic.
