Hi-
What's a Boeing 720? Is it like the 707? Do they still operate them? Has anyone ever been on one?

Ciao-- Jack

The B720 was a smaller version of the B707, It was designed to be used at smaller airports with smaller runways and pax loads. I am not at all sure but I think that UA was the first operator. I know that Pan Am operated them as well; although briefly. The B720 was quickly dumped after the 727 arrived. It was called B720 because UA did not want customers to here 707-X as (Boeing was planning to call it) and think that they were boarding an inferior type of B707.

As NYC Int'l has stated the 720 was a smaller version of the 707. You may have heard 707 Astrojet. This is what American used to refer to the 720 so as not to confuse the customers.

Most airlines operated the Boeing 720B, which was the fan-jet version, but Eastern had the Boeing 720. Theirs were never converted to fans.

In answer to your other question- I don't believe any 720s are still flying. Although there may be a few private ones in use. One of the last operators was MEA who used them up till the 1990s. Chris
