Noise Level In 747 Nose?

Mon Dec 11, 2000 3:13 am

Does anyone know, what the noise level is in the "first-class" section in the very tip of a 747?

It depends if the windows are open or not.

Cold, kinda quiet, you don't relay hear the engines. All I remember is it being colder then the rest of the plane.

I was thinking of noise from airflow - that's listed as the reason 747's cockpit is considered very noisy, and the reason the overhead areas are quite loud, too.

My wife and I rode in seats 1H and 1K (strange coding) on a JAL 744 last summer from NRT to SFO. My first time in the front row. I forgot to take my decibel measuring device but it was very quiet and extremely comfortable. The front of the aircraft seems to ride turbulence like its surfing, just going with the flow. My wife and I said we'd never go back to coach, but alas, this experience was due to a NW cancellation and we are now, unfortunately, back to the real world of elbow smashing and peanut lunches.

I've been in the front section of the 747-400 several times (it wasn't used for first class on the planes I've flown). Once I sat in the very first row on the entire main deck. You do get a lot of wind noise, as you do elsewhere on the plane, but you don't hear much of the engine.

However, this section of the plane gets loud when the landing gears are down.
