Airbus Advert

Tue Dec 12, 2000 6:41 am

In todays Toronto Star, I noticed on page 9, a full page colour ad for airbus, congratulating Air Canada on thier acquisition of the A321.
It goes as follows:
"Congratulations Air Canada, You're Raising Customer Satifaction another 35000 feet."
"Air Canadas Passengers will soon be enjoying even more space and comfort. THis is because one of our biggest customers is adding the A321 next year to its already extensive Airbus fleet. From the A318 to the A340, the Airbus range offers a level of operating efficency and passenger satisfaction to which others can only look up"

"Airbus, Setting the Standards."

Now, is this normal for either Boeing/Airbus to make advertisments about an airlines order? I think airbus paid for it, but it is also adding Air Canada tons of advertisment, for its new services.

And I must say, the A321 painted in AC colours, looks pretty bad, I hope the real life one looks better!

There used to be television ads from Airbus focusing on the A340's quiet cabin shortly after AC put them in service.

I can only recall one other instance of this and this was back in July in Seattle when Boeing was rolling out the 737-900. Boeing took out full page ads in both Seattle papers with the 737-900 in Alaska Airlines livery with the headline "It's got Seattle pride written all over it." The ad went on to thank Alaska for being the launch costomer for the -900. These type of ads seem logical and I'm sure they happen often.

When I was in Hong Kong this September I too saw the Airbus TV ad for the A340(it ran very often). It was aimed against the 777 because it was touting no middle seat in Business class. This was interesting since Cathay Pacific operates both and I flew in on a 773.

Yes this is very normal for Boeing/Airbus to make an advertisment for an aircraft order. I work in media (specifically advertising on a television network) so I know exactly what Airbus' strategy is with these ads. There are many reasons but overall the main objective is to increase awareness of the Airbus product for the those flying it, hope they demand it more not only of Air Canada but of other carriers they are flying and to assure the main decision makers they made the right decison for Airbus. Boeing spends millions of dollars through its advertising agency to produce ads and then buy select media for them where they know decision makers are consuming certain forms of media.

I remember reading magazines in the (late?) 1980s, with Boeing having an advert introducing Canada to the 767-300 after Canadian had purchased them.

I saw the Airbus ad in the Vancouver Sun yesterday. I thought at first it was an artist's depiction, until I saw the registration at the back (HL-xxx). When is the first delivery anyway?
