The only airline operating the 777 to Hawaii is United. If you live in Seattle, it will probably be a NW codesahre flight aboard a DC-10, as it would be out of the way to fly all the way down to Houston.

CO doesn't fly the 777 to HNL, only the DC-10. 99% of Hawaii flights are on DC-10's/L1011's.

Wrong CBA.

CO uses 777s between EWR and HNL. Also, it isn't true that "99% of Hawaii flights are on DC-10's/L1011s" as you put it. The most frequent carrier to the islands, UA, now uses 767s and 757s, as well as DC10s and I think a couple of 747s.

The DC10 flights are soon to be replaced with more 767s and 777s.

Continental does not and never has operated 777s into Honolulu. And although maybe not "99%" of flights into Hawaii are DC-10s/L1011s, there still were and are alot of them.

The percentage of DC-10 flights to Hawaii isn't even close to 99%! Only two or so UA flights, three or so NW flights, the few CO flights and all HA flights, for a total of what...about 15 DC-10's? Compare that to the multiple 767's from AA, UA, and DL at LAX, SFO, SJC, ORD (three/day), DFW, etc.

CO has never offered scheduled 777 service to/from HNL, however, the aircraft has flown revenue service to HNL. I recall about a year ago, a DC-10 crapped out, and a brand new 777 was swapped in to do the IAH-HNL run.

Ok, I exaggerated a little about the 99%, but a large portion of Hawaii flights are on DC-10's, along with a few 767's, and the UAL 742/777.

Greetings,

Go to the CO website, they should be able to tell you what you would be flying to Hawaii from Seattle. And that goes for any carrier. I found out in May of 2000, when I bought my tickets on AA to Hawaii, that in April of 2001 that AA would be flying a 767-300ER out of ORD to HNL. I also found out at that time that they would be starting a OGG (Maui) to DFW route in December of 2000.

As for the "little discussion" about the DC-10 vs. any other plane to Hawaii, there are very few DC-10's flying to Hawaii these days. I believe UA has one flight out of ORD on a DC-10 (which will change to a 767-300, then they are going to cancel that flight next year), AA has switched over all of their DC-10's to other aircraft (767's and 757's). HA flies the DC-10's on it's route's to Hawaii, but they are talking about getting ride of those planes. Delta never flew the DC-10 to Hawaii, just the L-1011, but they have or shortly will fly the 767-400 to HNL. NWA is the largest US carrier still flying the DC-10 to HNL. I don't think they plan on changing aircraft as of yet, like the rest of the carrier's. CO, I believe also, has gotten rid of their DC-10 flight in favor of the new 767-400.

is there any particular reason as to why so many DC10, L1011, and MD11s fly into HNL? does it have anything to do with having three engines and/or ETOPS?

thanks,
TB

Actually, DL did fly to HNL using the DC-10's they inherited from Western Airlines when Western was merged into Delta back in the 1980's. I think they were subsequently phased out in favor of L1011's.
