Olympic Airways DC-8

Wed Dec 13, 2000 8:34 am

I was looking at a 1960 Douglas DC-8 ad and it says:

"more airlines have chosen the DC-8 from any other jetliner: Alitalia-Linee Aeree Italiane, Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Delta Air Lines, Eastern Air Lines, Iberia Airlines of Spain, Japan Air Lines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, National Airlines Northwest Orient Airlines, Olympic Airways, Panagra, Panair do Brasil, Pan American World Airways, Philippine Air Lines, SAS-Scandinavian Airlines System, Swissair, Trans-Canada Air Lines, Transports Aeriens Intercontinentaux Union Aeromaritime de Transport, United Air Lines"

I just thought it was odd since I know that Olympic operated Comets and then 707s after 1966. Did they ever place any orders for DC-8s and then cancel them?

Olympic never had the DC-8, they must have meant the 707. The only Douglas product that Olympic has flown is the 717 (MD-95).

TEDSKI - the 717 is a Boeing now !!!
Yes, in fact OA did initially place orders with Douglas for the DC-8 since the range was slightly longer than the 707 in 1960. But, OA did not receive air rights to fly to the US untill 1966.
By then, with the advent of the 320C, the range and payload became greater and more suitable for OA.
I also believe that Boeing must have made monetary concessions to win OA over as well.
I did read once which airline took over the OA options on the DC-8 but I forgot. Does anyone know which airline it was??
