I would rather be a 747 F/O. The 747 is my favorite airplane and I wouldn't mind sitting right seat in it.

It would depend. I don't have an opinion. How about flying a 737 as Captain, and then flying a 747 as a F/O?

I need more info

1. What is my relitive senority?
2. What will my quality of life be like on each aircraft? (ie. more days off, working holidays, etc.
3. Will either aircraft require me to commute to my domicile?
4. Pay is ALWAYS an issue.

These are some of the things pilots consider when making that kind of choice.

By the way, I had the option of upgrading on the B717 or the old DC-9, I took the -9. Better schedules and a higher relitive senority FAR exceeds the pleasure of flying a brand new airplane.

Happy Flying!!

This is more about would you pass up being captain just to fly the 747.

3 f/a's on a 737 with a 10 hour layover in PIT. 15 f/a 's on a 747 with a 36 hr layover in MEL. Your likeliness to get laid on a layover increases 5 fold on the 747. Times that number by 2 if your layover is in an awesome city for more than 24hrs, and the Captain is buying all of the drinks.....The 747 looks pretty damn good up close and from the layover hotel!

That was a good one, Exusair.

Reminds me of my (pre-marital) days as an Int'l DC-10 F/E!

Exusair - You chances are much better with the girls as a Capt. over an FO. Capts. have more money, and girls like that!

The 747 has as sleeping area in the back so that could also add to your chances

Pay "not an issue", my achin' ass.

How 'bout this one. I am giving up my seniority left seat and OMA base for a possible sideways seat and a probationary year. It'll be worth it in the long term.

Lets see.

FO UAL B747-400:

YR1-- 61.10 YR2--91.24 YR3-- 110.30 YR4--128.87 5--131.99 6-- 139.02 7--142.17 8-- 145.37 9--148.55 10--150.65 11--152.77 12--154.89

CAPT UAL 737

B737 yr1--140.53 2--141.75 3--143.02 4--144.39 5--145.76 8-- 7--147.07 8--148.39 9--149.71 10--150.85 11--152.74 12--154.52 13-- 156.38

UAL 747 Bases:

JFK---Bad. Too much crime.

SFO--Good, but expensive housing market.

ORD--I'm a midwestern boy. Not bad.

LAX---OK

HNL---Yeah, but very senior base.

UAL 737 Bases:

DCA---Not too bad

ORD--Not bad

DEN--I like to ski

LAX---OKAY

SFO---OKAY.

Now, what are the chances of upgrade. Hmm. The junior manning for the 737 ;eft seat is March 1996 at SFO. Hell, that's four years. The JUNIOR 747 FO at LAX is more senior than the junior 737 Capt!!! A four year 737 Capt makes 16 dollars more per flight hour than the 747 FO.

Oh yeah, Capt's pay

What's the junior CAPT slot for the 747? Jan '78 at ORD. Hmm can you say GRAYBEARD???

B747-400 217.77 217.77 217.77 217.77 217.77 217.77 218.35 218.98 219.51 220.17 220.70 222.27

>>>"Exusair - You chances are much better with the girls as a Capt. over an FO. Capts. have more money, and girls like that! "

---Lainhol is right, a 747 Capt can afford a lot of viagra. And their crew hotels are a lot nicer.

Our airline progression starts right seat 737, moving up through a number of aircraft to right seat 747 after about 10 years, a couple of years later, moving back to the 737 as Captain.

Nah, I'd rather be a 737 captain than a 747 FO. Of course I can hold 737 Captain in MCO and within a year of holding MD-88 Captain in NYC, but that'd be a monsterous commute from PHX.

After your first few months online, the plane doesn't matter as much. When I first got on the 737, I thought I was the king of the world until I realized how slow mach .72 is when you're flying the last leg home in a headwind. The MD-90 is tremendous aircraft and fun to fly with the EFIS/FMS, but now I'm hooked and can't read a enroute chart worth a crap anymore.

Plus, as FO, you have to play chameleon during the trip. There's nothing more unnerving than trying to determine what the captain is going to be like.

Most guys are fantastic to fly with and it's 99.999% awesome. Unfortunately, there's always that occasional guy you fly with that is on the 'boorish' side and doesn't understand that he's not the hot shot maverick he thinks he is. You know, the "hey son, lemme showya sumthin'"-type

I think it's best said that once you're captain, you no longer have to worry about getting along with the monster in the left seat.... You ARE the monster in the left seat!!

My crown, my sceptre and my robe please!

Doug, I agree. But I would rather fly slow and land the plan than fly fast and not.

p.s. I love your site.

I would jump in the sack with anyone who has even looked at a control column. That's how cheap I am. Enough about me. Chicks dig guys in uniform and after a couple of drinks a Fairchild Metro F/O will do.

Hmmm, intersting question. I would be a captain on the 737. There is nothing wrong with the 737. Besides, flying the 747 is mainly on long flights, and flying the 737 would be shorter trips, with more takeoffs and landings, the fun parts. Pay in issue, then I would right-seat it on the -47.

I know a pilot(Asian Airline) who had to make this choice several years ago. He chose to be a 744 FO because the 47 took him to more places than a regional 37. He recently lost his job due to downsizing.

He says his prospect of getting a job anywhere is much more favorable if he had chosen to be a 37 Captain. There are of course a lot more 737s around the world and I understand Captain experience is much more in demand than FO time.

Just wanted to share my thoughts.

I'd prefer to be a 747 FO. As previous post kinnda mentioned, flying 747 would make you see more of the World. Besides, I like working long hour shifts.

Another reason I wouldn't prefer the 737 option is that I don't really like talking on public and Captains seem to be doing most of the Intercom talking.
