Boeing 2707

Sat Dec 16, 2000 6:33 am

A few years back, I was in Cocoa Beach, FL, and decided to take a ride out to the space center and look through the museums and exhibits. On my way there, I passed a pile of red, white, and blue garbage on the side of the road that looked sort of like an airplane. I glanced at it a few times and kept going. On my way back, I was waiting for it and slowed down to get a good look at it. I thought it was an old plane, like a DC-6 or something. I asked my father-in-law about it at dinner that night and he told me that it was some old model of a supersonic airplane. It was my last day there, so I couldn't go back. Was it the 2707? If anyone can elaborate on this, please do!

Thanks in advance,

I'm not sure, but I think it was a mock-up of the 2707.

It was a mockup of the Boeing 2707, Boeing's answer to the SST race.

Confirmed, it's the only one 1:1 mock-up of the Boeing 2707 SST. I would have prefered a different was of "preservation", though!

I visited this mock-up in Florida in the early 80's. Had tires made from wood! Search the archives. It should be there. What a tragic waste. It's the kind of thing society regrets a 100 years later.

Where are Major Nelson and Major Healy when you need them?

But more importantly where is Jeanie when I need her?

The nose section of that mock-up is now at the Hiller Aviation Museum at San Carlos airport just a few miles south of SFO. You can see a photo of it on their web site at:

It is in the process of being restored.

That's too bad. I was planning on putting a bid in for an Orlando or Melbourne flight just to go back and see that plane. Sure glad I didn't!
