Regarding The A330 & 340

Sat Dec 16, 2000 10:10 pm

the A330 & 340 look like larger versions of the A300 & 310 except for the midsection and the wings and engines so what makes them totally new? people here have been calling the beautiful 747 design old i think it just needs modifications to be no less than its Airbus counterparts, and why cant the A300 and 310 be modified in a similar way instead of producing new a/c to replace them i really do not find the A300 & 310 outdated and think they could serve atleast another 15 years same goes for the 757 and 767 why would Boeing and Airbus want to waste money developing new types
.....up there with the best!

The 330/340 is a totally different to the 310/330 except to the diameter of the fuslage. They have other wings, other engins and most important a totally other cockpit and avionics. The 330/340 is a fly by wire aircraft with sidesticks and a modern glass-cockpit. The 310 does not fly by wire and does not have side-sticks.
It is like you would say that the 707 and the 737-900 or the 757-300 are almost the same aircraft, they also have the same fuslage diameter.

All I know is I'm sick of hearing how Boeing keeps using the same 30 year old designs. That is totally untrue. If Boeing keeps using the same design, then Airbus is equally guilty.

Take for instance the 747. People say that it is a 30 year old design, but it isn't. It has a stretched upper deck, glass cockpit, new avionics, new interior, new wings, new engines, longer range, etc., etc.

What is the A340? Why, it's just a stretched A300 with new wings, engines, avionics, and NOT A NEW INTERIOR btw. So, for all you Boeing bashers......take a look at your own Airbus. Not that I'm trying to start a war here, but I'm sick of people making this claim, especially when it's not true. The 747NG, 737NG, are totally different from the old ones.

It's like a Mercedes. Think about it. The SL 500, (the two door high-end convertible), hasn't changed body styles in over 10 years. However, there are certain tweeks that are different about the car that make it new, innovative, and fresh, and just plain better. So, just because the outside may look the same, it is indeed a new an innovative design. The fuselage may stay the same on the outside, but it's what's underneath the hood that counts.

Uh, the A330/340 are a completely new aircraft save for the fuselage style, as has already been mentioned. It has a new wing, and an entirely different control system. The 747-400 has a glass cockpit, but it still has hydraulic controls, and sorry, but it is the same wing, with aerodynamic improvement devices stuck on the end. That being said, there is nothing wrong with a thirty year old design, provided it does the job, and does it well, which the 747-400 definitely does. The old addage 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' certainly applies here!

Hey UAL747
You did not understand my post. I am not saying that Boeing kept the same design. I only wanted to compare: as the 330/340 is a total new aircraft except to fuslage diameter, so are for example the 737NG total new aircrafts except to the fuslage diameter. It is the same with Airbus and Boeing.
