Pan Am's BOS-LHR Authority?

Sun Dec 17, 2000 10:14 am

Does anyone recall the specific circumstances under which Pan American lost their BOS-LHR authority in the mid-to-late 70s (or perhaps the early 80s). I remember this route was *not* part of the sale of London routes to United, and I seem to recall it was because someone in the UK noticed that Pan Am's authority was only *temporary* and had never been converted to a permanent authority even though they had been operating the route since the 1940s.

Subsequently, World Airways was chosen to operate a second US carrier service to London (but via Gatwick), but that was dropped after they lost a DC-10 in a snowstorm.

It just seems strange because now practically everyone flys from Boston to London (BA, UA, VS, AA, DL [soon], CO [via codeshare]).
