Will UAL Go For Additional B 757s?

Tue Dec 19, 2000 4:32 am

Hi everyone!

In the past, we have talked about whether UAL will order the B 737NGs or not and other models like the B 747-400s, B 777-300 etc etc.

However, it doesn't seem that they have been ordering any B 757s anymore. Though they own one of the largest 757 fleet.

Will UAL go for the B 757 anymore?

Currently UA has 98 757s with the youngest being 4 years old. They may in time, but htye somply do not need anymore 757s right now. The 757 is a very reliable plane for United, and it works well for them, so they may order more...only if they need it. If the merger were to go through, they may order more, and replace the US Airways' 757s. YOu never know.

Definitely yes. UAL just receive a 757 not too long ago, a few weeks old, so yes, they seem to be ordering more 757 and that is a smart move.

Sure they will. They need a combinaton of 757s and A320s to replace their aging and loud 727s. I like the 727 for nostalgia's sake, but they're getting dirty and shabby inside and the seats are uncomfortable.

UAL should replace the B727s with some B 757s.

I know that. I would say a mixture of B 757s and A 320. I personally like the B 757 a lot more.

If they were to get more 757s, it would be for transcon. The A320 can do transcon...but barly, the A319 is better for transcon, but only seats 126pax. If UA were to expand its east/west operations out of SEA, PDX, SFO, and LAX they may order more 757s.

The A320 is the 727 replacment, as well as some 757s.

When will all the 727s be completely phased out?

They should be kept till 2007/2008.

U A

you've got to understand that UA is trying to eliminate all of its 3 person flight decks. The 727s are expencive as all hell to operate, and half of the time they are broken.

There are current;y 75 in the fleet. Over the next three years they will be phased out. 25 will be leaving next year. They will be gone with in a matter of months, then the next year 25 will go, and so on.

I can tell you that most flight attendants hate those planes. There is only one galley cart on board. It is stocked with beverages. When they have to do meal service, they whole thing is done on foot. Yes you guessed it...the three f/a's in coach have to serve over 100 people running back and fourth from the galley.

Operations will be much simpler when the 727s are gone. Currently there is no replacement for the 75 planes. Who knows what UA will do?

Usually the A320 is fine cross country. As my name indicates, I do it frequently. But, I have experienced several coast to coast flights when a United A320 couldn't have a full passenger load because of headwinds and cargo. A couple of times they bumped most of the middle seat passengers. A good combination of 757s and A320s/310s gives UAL good flexibility in putting the right aircraft on the right route at the right times of year.
