A380 - Onboard Ameneties

Wed Dec 20, 2000 4:46 am

Does anyone believe that the proposed shops, casinos, gyms etc will actually be featured onboard or will they fill up the plane with seats ?? I can't help thinking that including these features is just a little fanciful, I think we've all seen this sort of hype before.
By the way this post is not anti-Airbus, I'm chuffed to bits with the launch news. Can't wait for it to take to the skies!!

I don't think that they will have casinos, gyms and shops on ONE plane, but I read an Airbus report on the use of underdeck space a few months ago, and they do have space for these things. The main decks will be filled with seats, of course, but the hold is over 2 meters high and Airbus is designing it so that an airline can use it as they wish. If there were casinos, etc. they'd be pretty small, and probably only available to biz and first passengers, but it is possible. Everyone who says "they won't have casinos, they're just going to fill it up with seats, of course" should realise that casinos etc. won't be replacing seats, they'll be put in the hold where no airline would put seats anyway.

I think, one airline which we may see with the proposed amenities onboard will be Virgin. This is great news although I don't think that they will make a huge impact in 747 territory.

I wouldn't like to be in the casino/shop/gym etc when encountering severe turbulence. Could be pretty dangerous.

More possible we will see a D version which can carry almost 1000 (Japan airlines may like that)

I'm sure Richard Branson will come up with some creative ways to use the space. Virgin is already going to experiment with double beds in Upper Class. Virgin could have private bedrooms and increase the possibility for more people to join the Mile High Club!

Does the JAA not have a similar FAA rule regarding FAs and their view of the cabin? I read somewhere that FAs had to be able to see 90% of the pax unobstructed from their jumpseats. How would private bedrooms work that way?

Well, the "Mile High Club" won't be so exclusive anymore when VS starts installing what amounts to "roomettes" on their A340-600 and A380-100 planes.

I do see, however, that we may see First, Business and Economy class passengers on the A380-100 having a bit more seat pitch than on the 747-400 now.

(Gawd, it's going to take a while for me to not call it the "A3XX" anymore   )

May not be related to this but it touches on it. What if there's CAT (Clear air turbulence) or something. Imagine what would happen. Pax falling over   , glasses dropping and if casinos were on, chips falling and arguments flaring.

On the subject. I think we can only speculate unless it's something obvious like more seat pitch, private cabins for F pax and some kind of bar and underfloor space.

haha...maybe virgin should change their name. I seriously doubt many airlines are going to put a gym on there. I can see a bar or lounge area kind of place. I can see it now if there were a gym: pumping iron pumping iron.. BUMP!!! SLAM!!! So much for bench press... Youve gotta love clear air turbulence.
