Wed Dec 20, 2000 3:57 pm

United is retiring its 4 DC10-30 freighters this week. The last flights are as follows:
N1859U> NRT-ORD as flight 9206 on Dec 22
N1853U> KIX-LAX as flight 9208 on Dec 22
N1852U> NRT-ORD as flight 9206 on Dec 23
N1854U> MNL-LAX as flight 9208 on Dec 23

These aircraft will not be replaced. UA is getting out of the dedicated freighter business this week.

Thank god!

Most of those DC-10s have been out of service for the past year! This leaves one DC-10 (3056) in pax service. That plane is shuttling between ORD and BWI.

It should be gone by the end of the year.

The current scheduled retirements are to eliminate all 3 person cockpits.

-All 747-200s have been retired
-DC-10s are gone by the end of the year
-727s are gone in 3 years
-737-200s, the remaining 24 have no retirement scheduled yet. They are going through "D" check (HMV) at IND, and will most likely be hear for four more years. There is currently no replacement for the 732.

United Has 3 Pax DC10-30's

Thu Dec 21, 2000 3:07 am

United still has 3 DC10-30's in Pax service. N1856U, N1857U, and N1858U. They are flying ORD-BWI, ORD-LAS, ORD-HNL, and ORD-LAX. I think they stopped flying the ORD-PHX and ORD-MCO routes recently. These three aircraft will be retired around mid-February, 2001.

From what my dad told me, 3057, and 3058 are out of service on mechanical. Currently there are 767s filling in for them.

For the past few days the Las Vegas trip has been in a 762, becasue the DC-10 doing that trip was out of service.

Email me, and I try to find out the exact status of all of this, and there retirement schedule.

Acually, the 737-200 is a 2-man cockpit, right?

Correct, Boeing 747-400. United actually converted their 737-200's from three-man to two-man cockpits a while back.

Actually, the 737 was designed with a 2-man cockpit, as well as the DC-9, and it caused quite a stir at the time too.

UAL Bagsmaher: Phoenix hasn't seen a UA DC-10 in years now, the PHX-ORD flights are now all 757/767 with the stray 727/A320 here and there.

The 737-200 was orgininally designed for 2-man, but the only way United could order it was to have 3 pilots in there because that's how they did things back then, 3-man crew. They say the 3rd guy got to ride around some before he could become a first officer, but now United has changed that, right?

Confirm on that one.....the Pilots union made UA fly around for a number of years. That is one of the reasons why sales of the 737 where so slow to begin with. Not the only reason but one of them.

It was kind of the same thing when the 767 first came out. A couple of them had to be flown with 3 man crews. Quantas ended up with a couple of those aircraft eventually.

Note To Desertjets

Fri Dec 22, 2000 3:38 am

We were flying DC10's to PHX a couple months ago. It was only for a few months this latest time around though.

Oh... did not know that, the last few timetables I checked showed 727/757/767... I do remember the day when both United and American had daily DC-10s in Phoenix, especially in the winter. Those days are now long gone.
