A380 Not The Only New Airbus?

Wed Dec 20, 2000 6:19 pm

As you guys know, Airbus uses a small fleet of Belugas (those really wierd looking cargo carriers) to transport components, including wings and fuselage sections.

The A380 will also be assembled from completed parts made in England (the wings), Spain, etc.

The wing and fuselage of the A380 will certainly not fit in the Beluga. Does that mean that Airbus will build a new monster cargo carrier? Based on the A340 frame maybe?

What do you think?

I think parts of the fuslage fit into the Beluga, but not the wings. As I know, they want to transport the wings on the top of the Belugas.

It would certainly be a huge freighter. I wonder if there would be possible sales potential (and military versions?).

Great for taking lots of footie fans to the World Cup.

I´m sorry not being able to present a source, cause I forgot. Airbus wants to ship the parts, because they do not fit in the Beluga.

Found the source its a German magazine called "DER SPIEGEL" issue Nr. 49 04.12.00. I will try to translate the part referring to transportation of A-380 parts:

SPIEGEL: How dou you (Airbus) want transport the big parts? Even your transporter Beluga is to small for that.

Noel Forgeard: The parts will be transported by ship, futher on the river Gironde, afterwards on the street. We rejected the idea, bringing the parts via an air bridge (If somebody has a better idea how to translate "luftbrücke", ideas are welcome).

Hope that helps,

Aerosol

Darn, I was hoping to have something new, even if ugly. Imagine a humpback A340. Yeecchhh!

There was talk at some stage or other of a Beluga style A340. Now that would be one cool airlifter...

Hmmm..... in the coming years, if the A380 is popular, do you think Airbus will build another aircraft to carry the parts of that A380???

P.S. I wonder how are they going to transport the parts on road...

I would assume they don't have the parts completely assembled while they're in transit. That just wouldn't make sense- imaging what happens if a truck carrying an A380 wing gets sideswiped into a building...CRUNCH!

BTW- I seem to remember talk of an A330 (may have been 340, I'm not positive) being converted into a Beluga-like form to carry smaller parts of the A380 fuselage...

I thought they wings go together in many prices that fit in the Beluga.

As LIONE said, they will be carrying the wings on the "roof" of an A340

The roof?!? Do you realize just how aerodynamically stable that thing will be? Will there also be a dog hanging its head out the window enjoying the breeze and the brady bunch running around in the back?

Will the Beluga retire when the A380 freighter comes out? I imagine that the circumference of the A380 will be the same if not larger than the Beluga....

Nothing is being carried on the back of anything.....surface transport is being used.........

WHy Not?

Why don't they charter an AN124 for this job, or even better, by the time that these parts will be ready for construction and transportation, Antonov should have at least the first 2 AN225 back in operation, couldn;t they just design a mount for the wings so that it fits with the connections designed to carry the BYRAN Shuttle on the back of the Mriya. That would probably be the cheapest system for Airbus, as they could charter a Ukrainian AN225 for very little money, and have a virtually ready transporter for any of their planes, only a few minor adjustments would need to be made to mount the A380's wings to the back of the 225..

Would be a truly European undertaking

I think they will because the old Belugas are not longer big enough. They really need a new monster carrier. Maybe they will base it on the A340 or they will build a completly new plane.

RE: How The Wing Is Carried

Thu Dec 21, 2000 10:25 pm

I've seen a picture of the wind tunnel testing for carring the wing on top of the A340. They are not going to put the wing directly on top of the A340, they are putting the wing into a small aerodynamic casing (like a streamlined cockcroach) before mounting it on the A340.

Once again, surface transport is being used.......the wing will not be flown to TLS....
