Honolulu- Get There Now Or Pay Cash!

Fri Dec 22, 2000 10:54 am

If you are planning on using FF miles to Hawaii take note

United - cancelled ORD-HNL
Delta - Cancelled ATL-HNL and DFW-HNL
Northwest - About to cancel LAX-HNL

Only TWA has increased service this year.

LAX-KOA
STL-OGG
and a second STL-HNL during peak.

In short if you have miles and want the trip fly now or pay cash on another carrier. (Unless you are a TWA FF member)

And also Continental is supposed to be downgrading to a 757 from LAX to HNL (or so I read in another post).

Question: What's with all this simultaneous reduction in service to Hawaii? Non-rev travel was already risky. Now it's going to be next to impossible!

Yield can't be that THAT bad. Or can it?

NW dropping LAX-HNL???? Wow - I'll beleive that when I see it...

I heard rumor of the CO moves but, had not seen the press release.

The big problem with HNL and Hawaii in general. Frequent Flyer award tickets. It is the #1 award destination. Airlines tend to be forcussing on revenue and really do not care about the FF awards.

Hence Hawaii is a disappearing market. You should have seen how many flights there were in the 70s and 80s. Many many more.

AA still has 2 flights a day DFW-HNL, 1 flight a day ORD-HNL, and at least 1 flight a day from LAX, SJC, and SFO to HNL. HP has at least 1 flight from PHX(?) to HNL.

I believe UA will eventually resume some sort of ORD-HNL service, and I also think DL will resume DFW-HNL service.

I thought DL still had ATL-DFW-HNL service. When did they drop it?

Actually Al, NW has increased service to HNL this year by making MSP-HNL a year-round flight. The flight will operate with a 747-200 in the winter/fall months, and a DC-10 in the spring/summer months.

I'll say the same thing that Scooter said...I'll believe NW cutting LAX-HNL when I see it. Maybe they'll cut one of the flights, but I don't see Northwest dropping both daily flights like that. What's your source, AC?

Source was a corporate communication citing the need to reallocate the aircraft.

Actually, UA is increasing service to Hawaii...not just TWA. Look for the third daily SFO-OGG flight to begin operations just as soon as ORD-HNL flies its last trip.

Contrails,

AFAIK, HP doesn't service HNL. Not with their own aircraft, that is.

HP no longer serves Hawaii. DL DFW-HNL with a DC10 was cut come months ago. I remember reading a rather long FAQ to frequent fliers regarding the service reduction. I also however had not heard NW cutting LAX service.

All this reduction however, raises the question of whether paper airline TransPacific has a legitimate business plan: fly older DC10s from HNL to SEA, PDX, SFO, LAX, and SAN and couple cheap flights with hotel rooms in a package format. If they can keep their costs very low, well there will always be demand to get to Hawaii.

Lets see TW LAX-HNL/LIH soon!!

A little heads up for Hawaii-

As of April 1, 2001, look for all 777 flights (with the exception of one SFO-HNL flight) to be replaced by 767-300's.

The move to swap the hawaii flights from a 777 to a 767 is a good move because people want frequency over capacity. Smaller planes more often is the way to go.

The 777 for 767 swap would be good as far as frequency over capacity...but there are no additional flights...So much for that one...
