News reports say that it is a "small electrical fire", but not where in the tower it is (it's one of those architectural free standing space age looking tower things).
Great scoop with the "breaking news" Tim - looking for a career in journalism?
Keep up the good work!

Just took a wander down to the end of my street where I cross the road to a view of the airport. Things seem to be rolling with arrivals by KL QF AN and departures by QF BA MH CX AN all in the last 30 minutes.

Does SYD become a CTAF now? Do aircraft just go with uncontrolled rules?

I'm sure plenty of pilots are communicating with dispatch over this little problem.

At least no one was hurt or killed.

OK, I don't know really what to make of this. But I figure that SYD ATC is going to be very thankful this didn't happen too close to the time of the Olympics!

Just a question : What are they doing out there in Mascot ? First, the pre-olympic power cut, now a post-olympic fire. A someone mentioned before, they must be lucky-guys, that this didn´t happen during the games.

Hope, nobody´s hurt!

RE: Sydney Airport Closed! Emergency

Fri Dec 22, 2000 7:57 pm

17:45 (AEDT) A FIRE has broken out in the control tower of Sydney Airport.

A fire brigade spokesman said the blaze started shortly before 4.30pm (AEDT) today and was caused by an electrical fault.

The control tower was evacuated and all flights to and from Sydney had to be suspended, a brigade spokesman said.

The blaze was found to have started inside a computer, he said.

Staff were evacuated to the nearby old control tower while fire crews extinguished the blaze and ventilated the area.

A spokesman for Air Services Australia, which manages the control tower, said the airport had to be temporarily closed.

"We're operating now on our contingency plans, which is to operate out of the old control tower... and we're operating at a limited capacity," the spokesman told ABC Radio.

"Planes are getting in and out but not at the normal pace.

"Certainly there will be some details, we're operating as full capacity as we can."

He said the old control tower could not cope with the same capacity as the new one.

"The old control tower is set up as a contingency rather than a full operational tower so there will be some limits to what we can do."
