Will AA Fly To Hong Kong?

Fri Dec 22, 2000 6:54 pm

Will AA fly to Hong Kong? Any plan right now?

I hope so! If they do, they should purchase 4 to 5 B 747-400s to compete with UA and NW.

I heard that AA wanted to start a route from US to Hong Kong, using B777-200ER. I don't know how's it, but I can sure that AA and Cathay has code share agreement now.

I had been under the impression that AA has rights to HK from DFW, but didn't have aircraft with enough range. Maybe I was mistaken.

The MD 11 or the 777-200ER would be ok for them

So are they waiting for the US and HK government for their approval?

An AA 777-200 did go to HKG once, because AA wanted to show-off their 777. Once AA gets approval to a U.S.-H.K. route, they will most likely fly from SJC.

American will not be ordering 747's for this route, when their 777's are highly capable of flying it.

AA did fly a 777ER from DFW to HKG to test the pane's range for a possible route. They're considering starting a DFW-HKG route pretty soon. I'd expect an announcement in the coming year as they have the rights to this route.

Rai, when did AA receive rights? Are you talking about the loophole they found in the US-China bilateral?

From what I gather they've had rights for some time now. Hong Kong is as far as I know not part of the US-China bilateral agreement.

Something tells me that the route will more than likely be ORD or DFW over SJC if they get US-HK approval. Something tells me that if they start service from ORD-HKG, CX will start HKG-DFW, and if AA starts from DFW-HKG, CX will start HKG-ORD. I think SJC is out of the picture right now, because in a way, they would be competing with CX out of LAX or SFO.

Why would AA buy 744s when they have B777....??

I doubt that AA will have 744s.

I do believe that AA currently has rights to fly into Hong Kong, the problem is that they don't currently have any airplanes that are capable of flying the route available in their fleet right now. The 777-200ERs that they have are working very hard, and there are no "extras" resting on a ramp at ORD or DFW waiting for work. When AA does receive enough 777-200ERs then they will start flying into HKG. As for AA ordering 747-400s, I find it highly unlikely. They don't have a very large presence in the Pacific Rim and don't need the capacity. I see them as a highly probable 777-200LR candidate though. Now, if AA was to continue to build up a presence in the Pacific Rim I could see them possible ordering the 747-400LR as it will have a common cockpit with the 777 and offer the type of capacity boost they would be looking for. However, I don't think we will see AA's colors (or lack there of) on a 747.

AA will already be doing a SCJ- Taipei route soon... And they already have Tokyo. Due to SJC's high # of buisness travelers, Im sure these flights are quite profitable.

AA did operate a 777 from ORD-HKG to test out the feasability of operating the route via a polar route.

Hope so, a bit of competition against Cathay and United wouldn't hurt!

I was under the impression that the authority was ORD-HKG. The new polar routes being tested were the precurser to flights in the future. There was something about this in a WSJ article a few weeks ago dealing with suitable landing locations in an emergency. My impression was once those are addressed & remedied, flights will be scheduled.

As for an AA 744..NO Way, it will be 777's as the flagship of the fleet for years to come!

Even with the new 777 routes for AA (JFK-EZE 31Jan01, SJC-TPE 1Apr01), they will still get a lot of 777s in 2001. In fact, they are getting two in Apr01, two in May01 and one in Jun01 and no routes have been announced for these 777 deliveries. They could start a new route to HKG or just replace excisting aircraft on routes like ORD-CDG, DFW-CDG, DFW-FRA and so on. I think AA would have announced a HKG route already if they had the authority. I think the US and HKG governments have been negotiating a new bilateral but they have not yet reached an agreement. I'm sure when they reach an aggreement that AA will be very quick to put for routes to HKG, either from ORD and/or DFW. The777Man

SJC int'l capacity is nothing you'd expect from a market it caters to. It's basically a rundown airport with customs tent for all international clearances. Air Canada flight from YYZ is okay because they clear the customs at YYZ since there are lots of US flights there, but I've heard that it can get quite interesting at SJC when clearing customs. But if you liking breathing fresh air before/after your flight, SJC is one of the best.
