Thank you T154

While this year has seemed to have it's ups and downs I would have to say the downs were quite large.

The Alaska MD-80 crash. I've never been so effected by a plane crash before. I know it's sort of wrong to say, but I think it because this one hit so close to home. The crash took place Monday 31 Jan. That Saturday I flew Alaska to PDX on a MD-83 and back to LA on Sunday, but on a 734. It was a combination of things I think. Not only is Alaska the airline I usually fly, MD-80 the plane I usually fly (and my favorite) or maybe the fact that I flew the airline the day before. I'm not sure what exactly it was but that one really got to me. Maybe it was the thought that what if I was on that plane on Saturday and it happened then. I wish I knew, but oh well. I'm not going to see a therapist or anything.

Does anyone else have a crash that effected them like that? Am I the only one?

Anyway RIP Flight 261 passengers.

I've been quite a downer so I'll add that I'm so happy the 717 is out and about flying!

SIA's 25% stake in Air NZ
SIA testing inflight e=mali and internet
British Airways grounding their Concordes

Lows   were

SIA 006 crashing (RIP)
Air France Concorde Crash
SIA wanting to buy in Air India

Highs:

- flying my best flight ever (Swissair GVA - ZRH; A320) the pilot had announced we couldn't land immediately in ZRH due to very high traffic and runway constructions, so he takes us on a scenic tour of the beautiful Swiss alps

- A340-600

- A380

Lows:

- SQ006 crash; it struck one of the world's best airlines

- a horrible flight (Delta ATL - ZRH; B767-300) uncomfortble seats, unfriendly and lazy flight-attendandts, I had to fly Delta although I booked SR (I'm glad their partnershiphas ended)

The aviation highs in 2000 for me were:

-Flying with Cathay Pacific for the first time (and it was on the Millenium plane 747-400, B-HOX!)
-the Launch of the A380
-The A380/B747-400 orders of Qantas and Virgin Atlantic

The sad news:
-The Air France Concorde crash and the Singapore Airlines B747 accident
-The Alitalia order for 777s (instead of 747-400s)
-No good news about the chances of the B747X
-The new livery of Delta

I think 2000 was not a very good year for aviation. More delays, more accidents, more labor problems and more financial hardships (higher fuel prices) than the year before. The lauch of the A380 seems like one of the very few brightspots.

I have to agree that all the airplane crashes were depressing, espescially AS261. Firstly, I'm also a big MD-80 fan, and I certainly didn't want to see them classified as "unsafe," because I know that's not true. Secondly, I was dreading what was going to happen to AS after the crash (esp. in terms of reputation and financial situation). I was worried that the maintenance investigation from late 98/early 99 would be exposed again. And...the concern was justified. Also, the accident occurred by the media capital of the world, and the wall-to-wall coverage it received was very disturbing. No other accident this year received so much TV coverage. Obviously, I feel sorry for the passengers in any aviation crash, but this was certainly the toughest on me from an emotional standpoint.

High? My Business Elite/!st class excursion to England on Delta! Very nice.

Low? AS 261 definitely, working for Horizon that one hit way too close to home. All crashes make anyone particularly aviation enthusiasts or airline employees saddened, but to be very close to one as 261 was is very sobering. It hurt, and it still hurts all of us at AS/QX.

My picks for the Year 2000:

HIGHS:
BWIA's new paint scheme
BWIA's new 737-800s (6 in all)
Piarco's (POS) new terminal is nearly complete
A380 launch
Joining airliners.net!
BA doubles 777 service to Tobago (TAB) to 2 flights weekly

LOWS:
Demise of Air Caribbean, Air Aruba
Air Jamaica's rapid demise in POS (4 months) due to weak market and over-aggression by BWIA
American Eagle, Condor pull out of TAB (Condor out of the Caribbean as a whole)
BWIA grounds 2 TriStars and prepares to replace the type
Concorde crash - the end of an era
All crashes - Alaska MD82, Kenya A310, Singapore 747-400, Alliance 737-200, Air Phillipines 737-200, Gulf Air A320 and others - all very tragic. My heart goes out to all who lost loved ones in these accidents.
BWIA near-monopoly in POS. I love my national airline and would like to see it prosper but, all things aside, monopolies are unhealthy and scarcely favour the traveller.

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Holy Eid, Happy Kwaanza and Happy New Year to all!

Sincerely,
Trintocan.
Hop to it, fly for life!
