Virgin Sun Future In The Balance Due 2 Huge Losses

Sun Dec 24, 2000 1:56 am

Virgin Sun is reportedly up for sale after massive losses since being launched in the summer of 1999. Although Virgin Sun holidays is selling holidays for summer 2000, there are no plans to launch a winter 2000/2001 programme. The airline has approached brokers to help lease out it's fleet of aircraft. Singapore Airlines which owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic have put pressure on them to offload Virgin Sun, and concentrate on the long-haul market.

That's a shame...they're the best charter airline I've flown with.

I personally think that Virgin overexpanded itself. Richard should concentrate on Virgin Atlantic Airways and sell off Virgin Sun, or let the company be taken apart and put back together properly by an intelligent individual from the IT sector of the industry.

Don't they only have 1 A321?

You're thinking of Atlantic.
Sun has 3 A320s & 1 A321.

I wonder where cut backs on unprofitable airlines at Virgin Group will leave Virgin Express and sister company Virgin Blue? It's not been Richard Branson's week.

I worry that Richard Branson is way over extending himself and that the more routes he adds to Virgin's
route network, the more the product will be diluted.
In a few years, Virgin Atlantic Airways could become
a parody of its self if he missteps.

Branson has great flair and a great product, but he is overambitious. Every one of his airline products outside the great success of VS seems to be a flop, even the new Virgin Blue is reportedly struggling (though CERTAINLY not dead yet!).

Be careful Branson or you may go under. VS can't prop you up for everything!

What about this new low-cost Virgin airline in Canada?

I think that Sir Richard should cut his losses. Virgin Sun should be shut down or sold off. Virgin Express should be reconsolidated and made more efficient. Virgin Blue is still in its infancy, but if VS were to open a LHR-SYD route it would be helpful. You could then sell tickets to connecting passengers. VS's expansion plans should also slow down. The current fleet is being taxed at a very high rate and even the deliveries of the 7 744s won't really bring down the "pressure" on the airframes. I understand that an airplane is not making a company money when it is on the ground, but the 742s, 744s, and A340s are being run into the ground.
