AA/UA DC10s

Sun Dec 24, 2000 5:26 am

At the height of their use, how many DC10s did American and United each have in their fleets? What were primary routes these planes were flown on?

Not sure about the exact number, However AA operated about 45 series 10's and about 12-15 series 30's, at its peak. The 10's were the originals from the Order palced back in 68 or so, plus the ones from NAtional/Pan Am trade of the 747's of AA for the DC-10s.Almost a 1 to 1 trade as I recall.
As for UA, not as sure, but probably very close to the AA total at its peak also.

UA operated 44 -10's and 8 -30's (4 of which were Convertibles)The freighter United Cargo DC-10-30's were retired this week. All DC-10's will be retired by April 2000.I belive most a/c went to Fed-Ex partly in trade for hush-kits for the 727-200's.They will be converted to MD-10 Freighters for Fex-Ex.When I was in Las Vegas in June, there were 6 10-10's in storage.I also saw another -10 in Greensboro,NC over by Timco.Probably to be turned into a freighter.I will miss the DC-10 , especially in United New Colors.

I think AA operated close to about 50 of them, and for UA, I am not sure. American is no longer operating the aircraft, and I was there to see the arrival of the final flight from HNL, oddly enough, I had taken that same flight about 7 years ago.

American Airlines, was the largest operator of the DC-10. Its peak in the early 90's topped out at 68 of the big trijets. Routes were primarily domestic (transcons, hub flying), trans atlantic, Hawaii, Sydney, Aukland (both from HNL). AA even operated the 10 for a while from SJC-NRT while the MD11 was having some bugs worked out. Odly enough due to the DC-10's performance it could not take off from SJC's shorter runway fully loaded to NRT so several times it stopped in OAK for a fuel top off.

I will miss this great airliner, it was truley one of my favorites!

United_Fan,

I think that you are correct. I rechecked. My mistake.

Merry Christmas
