Can An A320 Do A 9hour Flight Non-stop?

Mon Dec 25, 2000 4:48 am

I was shocked just a few minutes ago to see an Airtours A320 arriving at MBJ. Airtours flies into MBJ from Heathrow and uses A330,L 10-11's, 767 and even a 757. Is it possible for the A320 to make that 9 hour transatlantic flight non- stop?

Not with a load. An A320 has a range of 2500nm approx.

The aircraft you saw was probably an A320 that was operated by Skyservice of Canada, which leases A320s backwards and forwards to Airtours in each carriers peak season. They often are not repainted for the short leases.

Also, Airtours do not have any L1011s and they definately don't fly from Heathrow!

A fully loaded A320 can barly do 6 hours, so 9...if there were no passengers then its possible.

The A320-200IGW has a range up to 3065nm with 150 pax. LHR-MBJ is 4075nm. So, its not even possible.

Crosswind thank you for your information, but as for the L10-11 I got pictures taken a couple months ago with two at MBJ. Possibly they might have swapped them for the A330 but i know I saw them a couple months ago.(*they don't have MD-11's do they?)

No, they don't have MD-11s or L1011s, but they do have some DC-10s, they sometimes use them to MBJ...

My cousin flies A320s for a local carrier and i put this question to her. An empty A320 can theoretically make the flight non-stop. But these ferry-flights make "technical stops" on the way.

Now dont ask me what that means!

In essence, a "technical flight" means stopping briefly for refueling. So, in answer to the original question, an A320 cannot fly direct or non-stop to MBJ, without the need to make technical stops, thus refueling.

King767- No, JMC got their DC-10s (next year to be replaced with A330s) from Caledonian Airways.
