Will UAL Resume Service Between SEA And Hkg?

Thu Dec 28, 2000 11:09 pm

Once apon a time, UAL used to run service between Seattle and Hong Kong and I guess the flight number was UA 867. They used the B 747 SP.

However, since 1992/3, this route has been suspended. How come?

Northwest operated this route for a while but at last, it has suspended all its service between SEA and HKG

Do you guys think UAL reopen this route sometime later? If yes, the B 777-200 ER might be used.

What are your views on this?

No idea, but do you think UA will fly between Seattle and LHR in the near future as I hear that the BA flight is always full?
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

This is an educated guess on my part but the fact that YVR is so close is definitely a factor in the reason why SEA- HKG is not flown currently.

1. Exchange rates present an advantage for passengers who choose to fly from YVR.
2. There are many airline choices with nonstop and one-stop service to HKG.
3. AC is a star alliance partner
4. The Canada China bilateral is not as restrictive as the US - China deal. Conversely the US-Canada air rights are greatly liberalized in that AC or UA can funnel paxs thru YVR to beyond destinations

The UA SEA-HKG flight starts before UA bought the PA Pacific operations.
It was first served by DC-10s.
The service was stopped soon after the PA operations were taken over.

I don't think YVR is a big factor here since it is across the border. The drive takes about 3 hours depending on the length of queues at the border crossings. It is not like you are using an alternate airport nearby. You are driving to a 3rd country to fly to your destination.

I would think that Seattle does not provide enough traffic which originates from the city itself and connections are not as convenient as the SFO and LAX gateways. Both UA and NW provides service from SEA with connection through NRT. AA flies to NRT also.

Also, Hong Kong SAR is not part of the US-China bilateral. It negotiates its own agreements.

UA was forced to give up the route as well as the SEA-NRT route in order to get government approval to buy the PA Pacific routes.
