Favorite Departure?

Sat Nov 21, 1998 4:39 am

I was just wondering what your favorite
departure from an airport anywhere.
Mine would be:
SNA John Wayne noise procedure rotate then up to 2,000
in no time then level off. This requires a short field takeoff for
some!
RNO Reno same as above but is not a short field takeoff
straight up to 2,500 ft.
SEA Seattle departure to the North out over Lake Washington
Husky stadium ect... on a clear day of course!

What's your favorite?

I like John Wayne but when we fly small airplanes you have to try ans stya bove the airliners which is impossible to do so we get early turn off and that is OK but I like to fly sstrait away from the run way.

Mine is probably Mariehamn, Finland... You climb out above the stunning Finnish archipelago which is a very unique scenery in the world...

Another one I like is the take off from SFO runways 28L and 28R. If you are sitting on the right side of the plane in a window seat, the view of San Francisco and the Golden Gate is awesome on a clear day.

The north takoff from Washington National requires a steep bank to the left during climb-out to avoid flying over the White House or tall Washington Monument.

The east departure form Chicago Midway doesn't take any aerobatics, but provides spectacular views of the city from 3,000-4,000 feet as you head toward Lake Michigan.

My favourite departure was from Hong Kong.
After departing runway 13 in a KLM 747-400 it was a sharp bank to the left, almost 360 deg. Looking out of the windows on the left hand side of the plane you could see the whole of Hong Kong and Kai Tak. A sight I will never forget!
A tear in my eye, never to fly from there again.

At Ronald Regan National Airport. Immediate left turn & great views of several Washington Landmarks

Another vote goes to takeoff from 28L/R at SFO. The views are stunning on a clear day.

My vote is LGA -- even though the approach is much better (I've almost always had to circle over NYC because of heavy traffic, and the descent to the E-W runway is directly over the spaine of Manhattan), any view of the New York skyline is stunning, especially at sunset.

Kingsford Smith would have to be my favourite airport to fly out of. I like flying over Botany Bay.

I would vote for a 31 departure at HKG Kai Tak. It is just amazing when you climb over the big apartment-blocks in Kowloon. After a couple of seconds you have to make a 45 degree left turn to head out over Hongkong Harbour and thus avoiding mountains. The view of the harbour and Hongkong Island is awesome!!

My favorite is at LGA on a southbound flight. If they take off to the northeast on runway 4 or to the east, they usually turn counterclockwise and head west, then turning south just to the west of Manhattan. The view from a left side window seat is spectacular on a clear night.

HNL reef runway (either end). Once the runway disappears, the ocean almost is instantly below you. There is great scenery to look at. Also, the city looks cool, and if in the right plane you can see the Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor (that is awesome!). Last time I took of from there (UAL B747-100) we climbed to about 100ft and then did a hard right bank (I don't know why), but it was cool, all you could see out of the right windows was bright blue ocean right below you.

Mine is Seattle too taking off to the north. Then I like Los Angles International Airport.

My fave departure is in ROA off of Runway 33 and then there is a shallow right turn. When you do the right turn you can have a spectacualr view of the city. If you are a passanger you can kiss off the chance of getting a good view but if you are in the cocpit there is one good view until you break about 7,000ft or so.
See ya later,
