Will Orlando/Sanford Airport See More Service?

Thu Jan 04, 2001 12:21 am

I know Orlando/Sanford (SFB) has had lots of passenger traffic that keeps increasing from charter airlines such as Pan-Am, but does anyone think that some majors might put flights into SFB? They have had a large terminal expansion project that is now completed and are hoping to get more service into SFB to compete with MCO. Anyone know any more details on SFB's strategy? I'm very curious!

It may be a long time because MCO just opened that whole new concourse.

Although Sanford is served by several charter airlines, Pan Am (3) is a scheduled carrier, not a charter operator.

SFB will see more expansion, but not without serious concerns. Lately there have been some close calls with ATC between SFB & MCO. Remember that SFB is mainly small private planes, not airliners. If the ATC problems and fears of the many "well-off" residents down below can be solved, expansion will occur, if not SFB operations will move back east or back to MCO.

Perhaps a new low-cost airline could operate flights - similar to those from MCO - from Sanford? This would therefore increase the total amount of flights within the Orlando area, thereby in theory reducing fares.
