KLM 747 Involved In The Tenerife Tragedy

Thu Jan 04, 2001 7:48 pm

I want to know the KLM 747 involved in the Tenerife Tragedy was painted in the new (skyblue fuselage top) or the old livery (Mississipi scheme).

I think it was the current one as it was a -200B model

Mike,

If I recall the KLM 747 that was involved in the Tenerife accident was painted in the old livery scheme. Have you read anything about this accident?

The aircraft in question was actually still in the old "white top" scheme when the accident happened.

I can also confirm that KLM B747 "Rijn" was painted in the old livery with the white top and the two-tone blue cheatline when it crashed into the Pan Am jet at Tenerife.

The KLM plane was a -206B, Rhine River (Rijn), PH-BUF.
The other aircraft involved was Pan Am's Clipper Victor, N736PA:

Wasn't the PA Jumbo the first to fly commercially from JFK to LHR?

Yep. Clipper Victor was the first PA 747 to fly from JFK to LHR. They wanted to operate the flight with 747 Clipper America, but it had some maintenence problems, so they hastily applied Clipper America titles over Clipper Victor just for the roundtrip, and when it returned to JFK, the Clipper America titles were removed.
