Part-time Jobs For A High School Student

Fri Jan 05, 2001 12:00 pm

Would it be possible for a high school student such as me to get a job at a small municpal airport/flight school? If anyone has any experience in this please share. What are the types of jobs that would be offered? Also, would I need any previous knowledge/experience. I would even voulonteer to do things at a municipal airport since I need 40 hours of voulonteer work to graduate from high school. What are the chances of voulonteer positions being avilable? I want to contact a few companies but I would like to hear for somone who has had experience with working or even voulonteering at small airports.

Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated.

Don't you think volunteer work should be to help people/Enviroment rather then just have fun. If I was your teacher I would expect everyone volunteer to help others not themselves!

I agree but I would think I should do something I would enjoy. Also, there are many condtitions the work would have to fall under to be considered voulonteering. It can not replace paid labour for example. On the other hand it is supposed to be a learning experience so if I learn something and enjoy my self at the same time even better.

I have worked at a local flight school for about 19 months. All I do is sit behind a desk on the weekends, but the opportunities, and connections I have made while working there have been invaluable. It is a great way to network yourself out, so when you go for that job interview you have inside sources. Not to mention it is just a great environment to work in. You are meeting people with the same passions as yourself. I spend most of my time "shooting the shit" with customers. The pay, at least for myself, sucks. Other than that it is a great job.

LordOfTheFlys,

What exactly was your job? Where and how often did you work? They pay is really not an issue for me. Also, to get hired did you need previous experience/knowledge?

Thanks.

Hi Ya!

I'm 17 and I got a job at the airport here near where I live! I mean it's not technically with an airline or anything but it's in the gift shop. It was the closet thing I could get to the airplanes and stuff! I make great money there too.

It's a really fun job to have too. I get to meet a lot of people from all over and get to see all different kinds of planes and get discounts on stuff.

I run the pilot shop, and answer phones. I schedule A/C, file appropriate paper work when necessary, and get yelled at by unruly customers that don't understand why the planes are always down for maintenance. Just a lot of odds and ends. When it snows I get to sleep all day, and read threads on Airliners.net on my laptop. I work Sat. & Sun.

As far as previous experience goes... I would definitely say it is a plus on a resume. In my particular case I was not asked if I had any; but my flight instructor recommended me for the job, so I'm guessing that is why it never came up.

I have been looking into doing Reservations, (answering phones) for Delta in my city. Starting pay is $8.40-9.00 an hour, killer medical plan, and other benefits. It is a stepping stone for other jobs at Delta as well, i.e. ramp, etc. If my father wasn't a pilot for Delta my main motivation for wanting to work at Delta would be the flight benefits, but I can mooch off of my dad for 2 more years until I am over the cut off age.

Best of luck to you with the job hunting. Any other questions feel free to email me.
