More Airbus Deliveries For Finnair

Fri Jan 05, 2001 10:37 pm

Finnairs first A320 will be delivered in February, and will be followed by three more in 2001. Two more A319 (in addition to the four already in service) will also be delivered this year. The latest fleet addition is OH-LVD, a A321 (four in service today), which was delivered on October 31. This is all part of Finnairs fleet renewal programme, which will see all MD80's and DC9's replaced by A319's, A320's and A321's. The present average age of the fleet is 11 years, the oldest models being the DC9s with an average age of 22.4 years. The present size of the fleet is 57 aircrafts, consisting of a mix of MD-11, B757 (charter only), A321, A319, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87, DC-9-51 and ATR72.

Are they going to phase out the MD-11 ? If so, what will be the replacing a/c ?

And what about DC9-51's? Are they going to be phased out soon? Here in Argentina, a domestic carrier called Dinar, bought 3 ex-Finnair DC9-41's. They have a mixed DC-9 and MD-80 fleet. Perhaps they come to Argentina some time.

The MD-11's have a few good years left in them, but it'll be very interesting to see what they will be replaced with. My guess is A340, and hopefully nothing smaller than A340-500, maybe even A340-600.

I said that the LAST one was delivered in October. I seriously doubt that you saw all four, or maybe there's five of them now? Gotta check that out...

Actually zander is right. Here are the exact delivery dates for Finnair A321s:
OH-LZA: January 28 1999
OH-LZB: March 4 1999
OH-LZC: March 8 2000
OH-LZD: June 9 2000

OH-LVD, which you mentioned, is actually an A319.

Arg:

Finnair will phase out their MD-80's before they start phasing out their remaining DC-9's. That's because the DC-9's are still in good condition and they wouldn't get much money for them if they tried to sell them now. So it's wiser to sell MD-80's first as they aren't that old (delivered between 1983 and 1992) yet.

I understand the MD-11 still have a few good years in them, but this is such a disappointing a/c that a lot of airlines are trying to get rid of them (Sabena, Swissair, AA, JAL, ...). Maybe Finnair would be tempted to do the same.

QB001:

Hah! I don't think so. In fact Finnair is pulling it's fourth MD-11 (OH-LGD) off of leisure/charter traffic and back onto scheduled long-haul routes (there are only three operating long-haul routes now) so that will increase capacity by 25%. It will also increase C-class from 28 to 42 seats. At around the same time they will revamp the service in Economy, such as offering different choices of meals, etc.

I wish Finnair would get more MD-11's though, it would be nice to see a few more of them in the fleet, but since they are all going to FedEx or UPS, I don't know where Finnair could get some.

The Ticketor:
It's easy to tell by the registrations which type of A320 it is:
OH-LV* = A319
OH-LX* = A320
OH-LZ* = A321
