Upside Down MD-11's?!?!

Sat Jan 06, 2001 10:08 am

I was looking through some of the accident pictures and even though it happened awhile ago, what in the world did the MD-11 pilots do to get their jets upside down sitting on the ground? I saw the Madarnian (not sure if I spelled it right) and the FedEx MD-11 both upside down after the crash. I never looked into the details of these accidents but I would think if the aircraft flipped to land like it did howcome they did not get destroyed to as where it wouldnt even look like a plane. Those two jets looked fairly intact. Was this another case of major pilot error? kinda makes me upset to see new aircraft like that destroyed. If I remember correctly most lives were saved?
thanks for the help guys.

Well, the Mandarin (properly spelled) MD-11 was B-150. It flew into a... what's the word for hurricane? Oh yeah, typhoon. They landed in typhoon conditions.

The FedEx, I am not quite sure about. Something makes me want to say that the cargo shifted and threw the plane off balance. But I am not sure about that.

I thought that it landed hard and bounced and then hit down on the wing. The wing breaks off and the plane rolls on that side. Isn't that how it happend? That is very wierd to me!

Yes, on the FedEx one, they were making an approach at night into ERW, came down a little hard on the glideslope, hit hard, bounced, and when they came back down, they hit left wing low, sort of tore it off, the right wing still provided lift, therefore rolling the aircraft over on it's left side, where it proceeded to skid upside down to a halt.

The FedEx accident did happen as Aerotech stated. The crew contended that it was a bad CAT IIIb landing (i.e. the aircraft lands itself). I do not know if this was ever proven or not. The MD-11 did(does?) has a history of bad CAT IIIb landings, but this was mostly tail strikes (Garuda, a couple of times that I know about).

Hi Airnewzealand,
I had posted a message here saying that the pilot was not the main cause of the crashing, the main cause is the computer program error of the MD-11.
