AIRBUS GOOD NEWS!.....>>European plane maker Airbus Industrie is close to landing an order from FedEx Corp. for as many as 10 cargo-carrying versions of A380 super-jumbo aircraft with a total list value of USD$2.3 billion, marking the first order for the jet from a U.S. carrier, The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.
Such a deal would also give the Airbus plane its first victory over U.S. rival Boeing Co.'s "747X" jumbo in the market for big cargo planes.
A minimum of five 150-ton freighter versions to be called the A380-800F aircraft are expected to be ordered. According to sources cited by the newspaper, the jets will be priced at a significant discount from their list price, which is typical when a plane maker lands a "launch" order for a new jet type.
The board of FedEx could consider approval during the next two weeks, the report said.
First deliveries of the A380 (formerly A3XX) are expected early 2006, with the first freighter deliveries expected in 2008.
Airbus, based in Toulouse, France, last month decided to proceed with production of the A380, based on orders for 50 of the 550-seat passenger versions from various carriers and lessors.
Seattle-based Boeing has yet to land any orders for any versions of its own stretched 747, which carries about the same tonnage but for less distance, even after intense talks in recent months with FedEx and mainstream cargo carriers such as Atlas Air.
BOEING GOOD NEWS!.....>>Well most of us really expected this news...but here we go!
Boeing Co. yesterday confirmed a previously announced intent-to-order from Continental Airlines for 15 Boeing 757-300 single-aisle airplanes worth USD$1.2 billion. Deliveries of the new planes are scheduled for late 2001 through mid-2003.
Boeing has said Continental plans to use the airplanes, which are powered by Rolls-Royce RB211-535E4B engines, principally for domestic service.
"As we reduce our fleet to just three types of aircraft, this new 757 model will help us efficiently serve a set of routes that demand additional capacity," said Gordon Bethune, Continental chairman and chief executive officer.
"We believe the future for the 757-300 is very bright and that as other major U.S. carriers see how well this airplane works for Continental, they too will want to add the 757-300 to their fleets," said Seddik Belyamani, executive vice president for Sales and Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group.
The new 757-300s will complement Continental's current fleet of 41 757-200s. The airline will use its new 757-300s on a variety of domestic routes requiring additional capacity.
The 757-300 enjoyed a reliability rate of 99.64 percent during its first year of operation with launch customer Condor Flugdienst - the highest rate ever by any commercial airplane model in its first year of operation. Condor took delivery of the first 757-300 in March 1999.
In addition to Continental and Condor Flugdienst, American Trans Air, Arkia Israeli Airlines, Icelandair and JMC Airlines also have ordered the 757-300, totaling 44 airplanes. Fifteen 757-300s are currently operating in revenue service.
The 757-300 is 23 feet 4 inches (7.1 meters) longer and can carry 20 percent more passengers than the 757-200. It can fly up to 3,467 nautical miles (6,420 kilometers).
