DC8pax Airline In 2001!

Sat Jan 06, 2001 11:53 am

Hello everybody,I just wanted to tell everyone about an upcoming article I wrote for Airliners (April 2001).It is about our passenger DC-8s. I am an airline pilot for Air Transport International. We fly pax/combi DC-8-62s and cargo DC-8-63/71s! I have lots of video from a recent trip, flying a pax DC-8 from California to Honolulu to Johnston Atoll and Kwajalein Is, Marshall Is in December 2000. We have no plans to retire our DC-8s. They come from many airlines:JAL,Braniff,SAS,UTA,Alitalia and United.
Thanks Mark B.

Wow! I certainly look forward to your article! I didn't know that ATI flew -CF models - I thought all ATI's DC-8s were full freighters. I'd love to see another passenger DC-8; this fine aircraft holds a special place in my heart as it is the type on which I had my first flight.
The aeroplane has unveiled for us the true face of the earth. -Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The configuration of our DC-8-62 combis is currently 32 passenger seats in the rear portion of the aircraft. With 10 pallet positions up front.

The configurations vary upon demand. We have had as many as 76 seats with 3 pallet positions.

I was sitting in the ATI crew room in KTOL and was told that the only planes left are the 71 series planes. The 60's were taken off line.

How many pilots did you guys just lose?

How many 70's do you have? 6 if I remeber.

Anyhow....What's the prognosis for ATI now. Does managment still plan to bring 727's online paying 25 bucks an hour?

What's the latest info?

I have a few buddies working for you...Barry Weinzirl, and Tim Witriche

As far as I tell, the only photo we have of one of those -62CFs:

In another operator's c/s, which seems to have been retained for ATI (or was it the other way around?).
This looks like the same aircraft (N41CX), but one cannot be 100% sure:

ATI just parked 7 DC-8-63s.Most will not return.ATI furloughed about 48 F/Os and 25 PFEs due to BAX cutting the DC-8 routes in half in TOL. No pax -62s were effected, and they will keep some DC-8-63s for international adhoc.
The pictures shown are N41CX in ICX colors, which was acquired by ATI.

Will the furloughed pilots be recalled into the 727's?

Can you explain the current pay scale proposal on the 727. I have bits and pieces of info from here and there. I heard that initial FO pay will be in the neighborhood of $25 per hour.

As I understand the DC8 pilots will have to take a pay cut to move into the 727's?

Does BAX still have plans to sell the airline?

If you sould give me any info you have instead of small niblets it would be appreciated.

Thanks

One more question....Does BAX plan to do away with subcontractors all together?

I am looking forward to your report in Airliners! As a DC-8 lover, I was very exited when I read this subjectline...
but I technically don't consider ATI's operation a REAL passenger operation. I believe your only 'passengers' are military and CIA staff. There are other DC-8s around with seats installed, like the French Air Force ones and a few private ones. But still I consider the final true passenger flights of the DC-8 happened in the mid 90s, when Marshall Air, Rich Air and Advance (Canada) ceased ops.
Any comment? Are there any ATI flights where a normal fare paying passenger (like me) can get on? I'd be the first in line !
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

ATI is a supplemental carrier, just like World, Emery, Arrow, or past airlines like RICH International or Capitol or MGM Grand.
ATI is a full service airline. It is true that most of our customers are military personal or their dependents or contractors of the goverment. We fly the same routes all over the world with a published route structure and timetable for AMC. You, as a civilian cannot fly on the French DC-8-72s. You can fly on an ATI DC-8. Get a group together and fly!!!! It wont be cheap though.

Yes, I would also like to know where in NJ we can find these birds!

Also, what would be the cost (per person) of getting a group together to fly a charter somewhere? I'm sure a bunch of us airliner.net folks would love to go together somewhere!
