Top Ten Airports In September 00

Sat Jan 06, 2001 9:57 pm

Hello all

Maybe this is old news but I think it's interesting.
Today Swiss newspaper "Basler Zeitung" printed an article about top ten airports of the world.
In September 2000 London,GB (LHR) was number one. 5 898 374 passengers used this airport, 3.8% more than 1999. LHR is followed by

Atlanta (ATL) 5 894 026 pax. +0.7%
Chicago (ORD) 5 869 984 pax. -3.5%
Los Angeles (LAX) 5 437 114 pax. +4.5%
Tokio (HND) 5 007 936 pax. +7.9%
Frankfurt (FRA) 4 774 651 pax. +9.4%
Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) 4 659 644 pax. +0.8%
Paris (CDG) 4 512 627 pax. +13.2%
Amsterdam (AMS) 3 752 656 pax. +7.0%
London (LGW) 3 377 140 pax. +7.4%

This ranking looks different if you look at movements: ORD had 76 500 movements in September, followed by ATL (74 000) and DFW (70 000). London Heathrow only had 39 000 movements.
For Chicago this means that there are landing more than 2500 planes in one day, more than 100 in one hour or one landing or departure each 35 seconds during 24 hours.

I think this is quite impressive.
With kind regards,

LHR has a small % a/c movements cos most a/c are 747. I think at ORD etc you get loads of ERJ, ATR etc.
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

The numbers look odd - Frankfurt ahead of DFW?? In August DFW was number 6 and Atlanta was number one. It must be that European tourist traffic, which will drop off in October...

It's like GKirk said, most aircraft that use Heathrow are of the large type 747s A340s 777s 767s A300s A310s L1011s. You get large loads for smaller movements. I would think that Frankfurt has more international flights than DFW also which could account for the figures.

Wonder what the overall annual figures are going to show.....
