Fuel Burns & Cost

Mon Jan 08, 2001 1:01 am

I am courious if any of you pilots can help me. I was wondering how much would the following aircraft burn on fuel (in gallons 7 weight) an hour for say a two hour flight.

707
727-200
737
L1011
DC8
DC10-10

Also what is the current cost of jet fuel a gallon.

PS...biggest thing I have flown in a C172

The 727 burns approx. 7000- 9000 pds of fuel per hour at M.80 cruise depending on weight and FL.

In the climb plan on burning approx 7000 pounds of fuel to get to FL 350 at moderate weights.

The fuel burn from TOD to ramp is approx 3000 pounds.

JET A is approx $2.00 per gallon I believe.

Make the fuel price $1.00 per gallon give or take a little depending on where you buy it.

Jetpilot, i always thought that the B727 cruised at M85?

The 727 will cruise at whatever speed you want to cruise at up to the overspeed warning going off.

Normal cruise speeds in the 727 these days are M.78-M.82 with LRC comming in at about M.77-M.79.

I don't think JET A has been a dollar a gallon since I've been alive.

Where did you get that price?

...That's similar to what airlines faced the past year as the benchmark price of jet fuel, which is made from crude oil, fluctuated widely on the spot market. It was above 88 cents a gallon in March, dipped below 66 cents in April, rose to almost $1.10 in September and was just over 78 cents the last week in December...

Some DOT operating cost comparisons can be found here http://www.celticairways.com/L1011econ.html and information on fuel burns can be found here http://www.celticairways.com/L1011F.html

Those prices for JET A are market prices. Not the prices paid at the pump.
