Does U.S. Air Travel Hang In The Ballance?

I've read in the newspapers in the last few days about the numerous airline mergers that may or may not happen. I read that if the AA-TWA merger happens it could cause mergers for Delta, Continental, and Northwest. The many mergers would cause less fequent routes served and more delays and cancelations if a pilot or mechanic strike were to happen. It would also jack up ticket prices due to less competition. It was also said that AA would get up to 49% of US Airways after the merger to keep on good terms with UAL , and they would assist on the US Airways Shuttle routes.
What do you guys think? Could this ruin US Air Travel?
