Lisbon, Portugal

Wed Jan 10, 2001 2:00 pm

This is for anyone familiar with the Lisbon Airport. As you may know, the airport has been under-going "improvements" for many, many years now. The Airport is a mess and it is virtually impossible to find your way around. Nor is it appealing to the eye, all of the scaffolds aren't very attractive. Well, now there are plans to get rid of the current airport in Lisbon and build a NEW one. How messed up are things becoming over there??

Last time I was over that way (about 4 years ago???) they were also undertaking some serious roading reconstruction near the airport. It took forever to get into town! From memory, they were preparing for a big event, possibly a sporting event - can't remember exactly. However when the traffic is flowing well, it doesn't take long to get into the city centre. It will be interesting to see what develops!

I was at LIS last July and had no problems finding my way through the airport.

The road network seemed OK last summer, so I guess those major reconstructions were finished...

I was born in Lisbon 40 years ago from TODAY, and I lived there until 3 years ago when I moved to the South of Portugal. Lisbon Airport is an old airport indeed, it was built in 1940 and the location after many years is now inside Lisbon already, that's why there're plans to built a new airport 60 miles north in a place where it was an Air Force Base called Ota. Now one thing that I don't appreciate as a portuguese I'm is saying that the airport is a mess, well it will not be much different than other airports, for example I was in August 1998 at LAX and american friends that airport was also a very big mess, specially the United area, everything was upside down and the resting area was much worse than Lisbon Airport....., what happens is sometimes airports have to change and Lisbon Airport has tried to keep going during all these years, now it will change so we hope that the new one is better, we can't forget that this type of airports that where builted during the 40's had in mind a complete diffrent idea of air transportation, you can just built a new airport in a short period of time, so if you look to other airports you find that most of them had to reshape themselfs and other ones had to be builted, look to Madrid, I've seen that airport always with works going on for years, Paris also and that's why they builted a new one Charles de Gaulle, Zurich also is in some very heavy works going on so it's life and we have to deal with that but Lisbon don't have more mess than others!!!
