DC8 Incident With Radio Tower...

Fri Jan 12, 2001 3:12 am

Does anyone know the specifics? A DC8 on an approach some years ago had 12 feet of it's wing removed after comming into contact with a tower on it's approach to land.

I know the plane landed safely, and was repaired. But I don't remeber the specifics of the incident. I think it was Kallita or ATI.

Any info would be appreciated.

I know of an Alitalia DC8 over Syria that had a missile go straight through a wing between the two engine installations (without exploding). The aircraft made an emergency landing at Beirut, streaming fuel and hydraulic fluid. Apparently the missile was meant for a Syrian fighter courtesy of Lebanon's southern neighbour.

And of course the two celebrated incidents in the 60s when 707s lost a wing from the outer engine pylon (and engine), one in a midair collision with a Connie, one after an engine explosion. Both aircraft (one PA at SF, one TW at JFK) landed safely, prompting TWA's famous addition to their MEL: "707s may be dispatched with either left or right wing missing."

Never heard of your DC8 incident. Most curious.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Never heard of your incident. It was not ATI!!!!!
Kalitta cartwheeled one at Guantanamo Bay(MUGM),Cuba awhile back, but it was destroyed. Could be an urban ledgend!!! Let everyone know if you find something.

I flew DC8's for Fine Ailrines. It's definetly a true story. My crew were telling me the story during a flight but both of them only had bits and pieces of info. I know it happened but I don't know the specifics.

From what I was told it happened somewhere in South America.

Some 2-3 years ago, maybe even longer, a Condor B767 hit a radio mast shortly after a nighttime departure from I believe it was Porlamar, Venezuela (correct me if I am wrong on the location).
The crew was not actually aware what had happened and it was not until after they had returned to Porlamar when they found out how much luck they had.
As far as I know no part of the wing separated at this incident.
Might it be possible that your colleagues mixed up the a/c type somehow???

There was such an incident and it may well have been ATI or Kalitta. I saw a photo of the aircraft a few weeks ago. As soon as I remember where I saw it I will post the info.

Could it be possible that it was Fine Air DC-8 N54FA??
The NTSB has a notice about an "incident" that happened on February 2nd, 1993 at Bogota, but no details and no final report are given!

In the late 70's, a DC8 landing at Stansted in heavy fog, found itself a wee bit to the left of the runway and during its rather well executed go-around hit a ground object, which unfortunately my memory now cannot re-call, although I think it may have even been the tail of another a/c. The bent 8 landed safely.

The only other 8 I know which lost a wing section crashed fatally, which I believe was an Air Canada a/c, in the 60's. I beleve the accident was caused by a wing ground strike on landing due to incorect spoiler deployment.

Finally, I can re-call a Spantax CV990 surviving a mid air with an Iberia DC9 in the 70's (the 9 crashed). The CV landed safely, albeit without large bits of one wing.

Wasn't there an incident in Paraguay or Bolivia in the mid-late 70's (maybe early 80's)involving a Braniff or old Pan Am DC-8? As I type this I had a memory flash of a KLM aircraft involved....Any ideas? Does this help???
