Leased Aircraft With Full Liveries!

Fri Jan 12, 2001 4:56 am

Hi!

One thing that I do like to see when I look to airplane pictures is an aircraft that come to an airline that we know it's leased for a certain period of time and have the airline full livery, some of them are not quite notable because they're the same airline model, for example TAP as far as I know only lease 2 airplanes with their full airline livery. One was a L1049H in 1959 CS-TLD and in 1978 a B. 727-155C CS-TBV. But I've seen some wired aircraft leased with full airline liveries for example:

- A KLM Bac1-11!
- An Air France CV990!
- An Iberia CV990!
- A Pan Am DC-8-62!
- A Delta DC-10!

I think some of us can remember quite a few airliners with extremely unique liveries no?
Regards!
I wait your feedback!

I think the DL DC-10s were acquired when they took over Western Airlines in the 80s. Can anyone clarify that for me please? DL also had the distinction of operating 747s for a short time as well.

Weird liveries?

*SQ Concorde - SQ livery on one side, BA on the other
*Polynesian 737-300 with Royal Tongan livery on one side.
*Airtours 747-200...leased from Air New Zealand. Had Air New Zealand cheat-line but otherwise was in Airtours livery.
*Transaero An-124. I have a photo I took back in the early 90s of it. No-one I know in Russia knew they operated the An-124, and www.transaero.ru makes no mention of the fact either.
*Kazair West and Rusair....both airlines operate Tu-134s in their own livery, however both airlines are actually operated by and under the operating certificate of Clintondale Aviation.

DL had DC-10s twice as I recall. First was in the early/mid 70s; they acquired five from McDD to cover for late L1011 deliveries. These aircraft later went to UA. Second was the WA merger in the early 80s. I think most of these ended up with AA within two or three years. DL folks please correct any memory lapse on my part.

With an order for 25 TriStars it seemed rather strange that Delta ordered 5 DC10-10s from MDD. This decision was taken to avoid fleet problems in case of late delivery of the L-1011s. Before delivery from the manufacturer Delta sold all the DC10s to United, but leased them back for 2 and a half years. During their service with Delta the aircraft flew with United registrations (N1833U to N1837U).
With the take-over of Western in 87, Delta received DC10s again but all nine airplanes were sold by the end of 88.

Delta operated only UA DC-10-10s in the early 1970's in its colour scheme. The Western Airlines ships did never enter the DL fleet. Eastern also operated some DC-10-30 in its bare metal hockey stick livery, leased for transatlantic services to London etc.! Both DL and EA, by the way, also operated B747-100s in its liveries. EA leased them from Pan Am in order to secure the company's market shares on the New York-Miami, New York-San Juan, etc. (north east-south east) routes.

Some additions to the "leased aircraft with full livery" topic:

* Iberia L-1011 (lsf Air Atlanta)
* KLM CV-880 (lsf Viasa)
* SAS CV-990 (lsf Swissair)

Hello Notarzt,

are you sure the Western DC-10s never flew with DL???
The "jp airline fleets", Edition 1987/88 lists them as N902WA to N915WA within the Delta fleet.
I do have also a decal sheet that fits a DC-10 plastic model kit and this decal sheet comes from manufatcurer "FlightPath" and it offers the possibilty to make it a DC-10-10 with registration N902WA in full DL livery.
And I can remember that when I was younger I had collected a lot of postcards and one of them was a DL-DC-10 ex Western. (Maybe I am wrong for this, but the other two are for sure).

Sincerely, CC32

Daniel - you are definitely wrong about the Western DC10s not flying for Delta - I flew on one from ATL to LAX in January 1988.

There are several other examples including Tower Air 747s in full Saudi Arabian colors, World MD11s and Caledonian L1011s in full Aer Lingus colors, Falcon Air 727-200s in full Aeropostal colors and an Intercontinental DC9-10 in full JD Valenciana colors back in the '80s.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

Hi!

Just to add a few more:

L1049H - Sabena w/ US registration
B. 737-200 - American Airlines
B. 747-300 - Iberia
C-46 - Lufthansa

It's interesting to see your feedback, quite interesting also the pictures I've seen, I never knew that for example Virgin had a B. 767 with their colours!!!

regarding the 747-400 in condor colors and the 767-300 in lufthansa colors.
the 747-400 in condor colors was operated by lufthansa and wasn´t leased by condor, it only flew lufthansa services. in fact, this plane was painted in the condor colors ans somehow operated under a condor license to allow lufthansa flying to taipeh, taiwan. at that time, and perhaps still, lufthansa didn´t have the traffic rights to a third chinese destination, the other ones being beijing/peking and shanghai.

the 767-300, which lufthansa leased from condor, was used to keep the australian services alive. in the mid 90s LH pulled out of the australian market with their 747-400s and deployed this leased 763 on the route, Sydney via Bangkok three times a week. but only after one season, lufthansa entirely gave up all its flights to australia because they regarded the 763 not as suitable for such a long route.

to everyone unfamiliar with condor: it´s the charter subsidiary of lufthansa

regards

Daniel (JohnnybGood),

I think most people here are pretty aware of the reason Lufthansa operated the B747-400 under Condor operations (China <> Taiwan). The B767-300 in Lufthansa colour was another "test" (somehow). Unfortunately, they did not paint their B757-300 in LH colours.

Daniel/Notarzt,

someone on this forum (I think it was Amir) said the LH 753 tests were done by two aircraft; one of those was in Condor colours (D-ABOC) while the other one was painted in LH colours, according to Amir. He says he saw her in HAM.

In the early 90's GARUDA operated a B747-200 combi
from SAA in full GARUDA colours. The plane was registered 3B-NAS and was ex-ZS-SAR. The plane operated for 2years from JKT/DPS to LAX. It had the
complete SAA interior, down to the video system that said welcome onboard SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS! Another interesting note was that the cockpit crew were leased from AER LINGUS, so in effect a triple-hybrid. This plane was placed on the Mauritus registrar through a Singapore based leasing company as South Africa and Indonesia did not have diplomatic relations at that time. This aircraft was converted into a B747F after return to SAA and I believe it is now operating with MK airlines.

Folks,

I think we better be REAL careful about what we mean by leased airplanes with full airline liveries.

With companies like ILFC and the even bigger GECAS, a lot of supposedly "big" airlines are flying planes that technically belong to a leasing company. Like for example most of TW's fleet; the EI A333's; the Swissair A346's; the ex-Reno Air MD80's now flying for AA; among many others.

Lan Chile 747
KLM 737-200
Aer Lingus L1011 / MD11
Sabena J31

Ray,

I wanted to bring up the same point of view before. I believe the original intention of this topic was to name airlines that leased aircraft from other AIRLINES (not leasing companies) for a short or medium period of time but, nevertheless, applied their full livery to these aircraft.

Further additions:

L-1011 Air India (lsf CaribJet (V2-LEJ & V2-LEK))
L-1011 Delta (lsf TWA (N81028 & N31029))

Hi!

I've seen really great stuff here. By the way one of the airlines that normally would paint their planes for their leased costumers was no dobt World Airways, they are unbeatable on that, I've seen a MD11 with El Al colours ( not full though ). Also I've some that I recall now:

BA 737-200 before they got theirs they leased from Transavia.
Lufthansa DC-8-32 - The first prototype flew for a while with full Lufthansa old livery.
Eagle Air - B. 707 leased from TAP in full Eagle Air livery and registration.

Best regards!
