The "1" at the end of the line indicates one stop, which is Auckland.

We have since discovered that in Oct the flight goes back to being Non-stop

My understanding is that this is a seasonal thing & that it is even possible that the B777 maybe used? The major reason for the change though I believe is because of aircraft reliability reasons, not because of loads. UA apparently struggle a bit with the long sector with their current fleet of B744's that can cover the distance. These aircraft use uprated P&W engines. As far as I am aware UA have been very happy with their Melbourne service, not sure about AKL though?

There is growing speculation that Ansett Australia will be adding flights from Australia to Los Angeles under its new merger with NZ. It has already added nonstop MEL/HKG flights since the merger ocurred. I have heard that MEL AND BNE nonstop to LAX with AN were being considered, as it would enhance the Star Alliance partnership, not create excess capacity on the SYD/LAX run. The UA pullout could be for several reasons, including the fact that load factor cannot operate at full capacity due to the limited range of the 747-400 over this distance. This is why QF announced its intention to purchase the 747-IGW, which will allow it to carry a full pax load plus freight on MEL/LAX sectors among others.

United would not be able to fly a 777-200ER from LAX to Australia on a reasonably direct route with a decent load under ETOPS 207. This is one of the routes that requires a tri-jet or a quad.

Jase,

I am quite aware of how to read a CRS screen... when I was a trainer for United Express, I kinda had to learn them :P (all in joking manner).

I was just stating that the flights still exist...

There is no way in the world UA would return to Brisbane. The yield is just not there. They used to operate on to BNE from SYD about 5 years ago, but as soon as code-shares came in with Ansett, they pulled out straight away, in fact the staff were not even advised until just before it happened - apparently!
Also UA are about to start JFK-HKG non-stop, so they probably think that this market is a priority & when the aircraft become available again, later in the year, they will return to Mel non-stop iso via Akl.

Rumor on MEL radio this morning was that both QF and UA have been fined numerous times for arrivals in MEL from LAX with low remaining fuel. Apparently fine is AUD50000 per incident.

Hopefully this will be oversome with QF 744LRs when they arrive. In the meantime the airlines must either resume AKL stop during southern winters or fly with light loads which limit route profitability.
