Air Force One Widebody In "Thirteen Days"

Sat Jan 13, 2001 8:11 am

I just saw Thirteen Days today and there is a scene where the president is getting off his jumbo jet. It's a four engined airplane with no upper deck, so I was wondering what it was. The movie was supposed to take place in 1962, so I'm trying to figure out if it's historically accurate or not.

Thanx

If it was in '62 wouldn't it be the 707?

Almost. It was the military equivalent.

JFK was the president who ordered the pair of 707s for Air Force One. It was Jackie O. who came up with the current blue/white paint scheme.

If I'm not mistaken, it was President Bush (the first one) who took delivery of the new 747s that serve as Air Force One.

It was the thirteen days in October 1962, the "Cuban Crises". Robert F. Kennedy wrote a book titled "Thirteen Days", I assume the film was somehow based on RFK's report (sorry guys, I haven't seen the film yet; it takes some time until it get's here across the Atlantic). John F. Kennedy had the B707 as Air Force One then. The B707s were used until George C. Bush received the B747s.

Back in the early and late 60's they refered to 707's and DC-8's as jumbo jets, so maybe that's where he came up with the idea that it was a widebody.

Also, it was Eisenhower who ordered the 707's. He was the first president to fly have the 707 as "Air Force One." It was the Kennedy's however that had the plane painted the way they are now.
