LAX Spotting

Sun Jan 14, 2001 2:17 am

I'm thinking about a trip to LAX tomorrow. Does anyone know any good places in/around the airport to spot? Keep in mind that I'm taking Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus...so I won't have the mobility of a car. I just walk! I would like to spend the whole day there...any tips on what to bring? Binoculars, camera...what else? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What time do you plan to be there? Maybe I'll take a ride out in the morning and show you around before I go to work.
If you don't have access to a car, then the end of Terminal 1 will be the the best spot both spotting and photo wise. There are 2 gates that Southwest and America West use, but in normal conditions, you can shoot right over the planes that are parked there with no problem.
A 200MM lens will be more than ample to get everything from that spot.
Otherwise, if you plan to get some good pix, then plan on hoofing from terminal to terminal to catch the planes as they arrive or depart from the gates. If you'll settle for mediocre shots (you want quantity versus quality), then I would suggest you take a hike to the top of the theme building. Also, the ends of the south terminals (with the exception of 4) will allow you so-so views of rws 25, but you will be shooting against the sun.
If you are feeling ambitious, you might want to consider taking one of the LAX free shuttle buses (they are white, green, and blue)-namely the one to employee parking on 111th street. Get off, and walk about 2 blocks over to the Northwest cargo parking area. That will allow you some dynamite shots of everything using rwys 25, especially the arrivals. Of course, without a car, you will be stuck (meaning no food, water-unless you bring it with you, nowhere to sit and no bathroom).
Then, when you are ready to leave, walk back over to where that bus dropped you off, and take it back to the terminals.
I would not advise anyone to attempt walking to/from the terminals and this spot. It's about 2 1/2-3 miles each way through some heavy traffic.

Try sitting in or around the In and Out on Sepulveda where you can get good views of the arriving and departing traffic on Runway 24. I don't know how you would get there from where The Big Blue Bus drops you off.

I used to be in this predicament too(before I got my wheels and job).Just take The Big Blue Bus #3 and it will take you to Sepulveda (behind runway 24),LAX bus center where you can walk across to parking lot C and catch the LAX Shuttle bus into the airport which stops at all terminals (continue on past Sepuveda),or if you want behind 25 continue on the 3 till you get to the end of the line at the Aviation Metro Green Line station get off the bus and walk back along Aviation(only a 5 minute walk) till you get back to the runway unless there is a stop along the runway but I don't think there is one the 3 should get you there pretty quick and have a good time.
