BA And Lagos...Why So Profitable?

Mon Jan 15, 2001 3:11 pm

Over the past few months i have been reading several comments about Lagos,Nigeria being one of BA's most profitable routes. Infact on a thread posted very recently i read someone say that Lagos was infact British Airways "Most Profitable route".
I am not surprised that Lagos is a profitable route for BA, but the fact that it is one of THE MOST profitable, is something i do not understand totally. My question is what is it about the Lagos flights that make them more profitable for BA then most other flights.

All comes down to yields - which in turn is a function of competition. LON-LOS is a duopoly with BA/WT, and (until now) has been operated by a BA aircraft (previously B747-200; currently a 777). WT is now leasing a Skyjet DC10 to operate the route.

hi
I understand LON-LOS is a duopoly as long as you talk direct flights;but if you accept to make a connection you can fly AF,SN,or LH to LOS. from LON the AF and SN flights are interesting and probably cheaper.
Nevertheless I've heard BA personnel saying that 1st and biz were always kind of full on flights to LOS,maybe that explains the revenue

The main reason why LOS is such a remarkably popular destination from LHR/LGW, is because Nigeria is a former British colony. Thus large amounts of Nigerians live in the UK, and wish to return home or vice versa. It's the same as with India, for example.
