Emirates To US

Mon Jan 15, 2001 11:52 pm

This is still at a planning stage however...

Emirates are considering entering the US market by the end of the year 2001. They would do this by operating a one-stop A330 service via Manchester in to EWR.

Emirates A330 aircrew are going on a North America air route training course in a few months.

The Airline feels this could enable them to start building their presence in the US market before launching on a bigger scale in January 2003 when the A340-500s arrive. They are experiencing very strong USA bound traffic on their flights through LGW and LHR.

Yes indeed i am sure they are experiencing alot of USA bound traffic. These are the people who use LHR as a transfer point to get onto other airlines to fly to USA.Emirates is doing a dam good job of feeding airlines like Virgin and United and AA. If Emirates flew to the US,all these pax would belong to EK as their would be no need for alot of them to transfer. As you are saying that EK is thinking of launching this DXB-MAN-EWR, there is every reason to beleive that EK is going to experience very high loads.
But if they start their service now it would be on a somewhat smaller scale. If Emirates waits till it gets its A340-500's, it can enter the US market with a bang with the help of some serious advertisement and promotion.Then people here in America would know what Emirates is ......!
INSHALLAH they will do good.

According to a friend who works for them, they will be starting to the States in 2002 when they get the A340-500's non stop to NY direct over Russia and the pole. And LAX is also on the cards. I havent heard the story about through Man though. Manchester is a very good market for Emirates now with most flights at full or very near full capacity and sometimes they are substituting B777 aircraft instead of the A330, in fact I have heard a rumour that the 777 will be going onto the route for the summer.

I'm curious as to where this US bound traffic is coming from? While there is a Dubai/UAE based market for the US, I doubt if it's enough to fill up a daily A340-500. US-based bound for Dubai? I doubt if there is a big market there as well. I suspect that a big chunk of the US bound traffic will be India based, perhaps some SE Asia (Thailand, Singapore, etc). Emirates are rather popular among travel agents in the US who specialize in travel to the Indian subcontinent, and I suspect that that is where most of the revenue stream will come from.

Who would EK be competing with at MAN? BA?

EK doesn't feed AA. Gulf Air does.

There is a good article on Emirates in Flug revue (english page). they talk about future expansion to the USA & Canada;

I certainly hope they come over to this side of the pond sooner than later! That will give us on the east coast some alternatives to the MH nonstop from EWR-DXB. Even though initially there would be a stop at MAN it wouldn't matter...i'd fly Emirates. MH has rediculous fares on the route since they more or less monopolize on it.
