Airline With Most Toys...

Fri Jan 19, 2001 4:10 am

I want to debate the relative strengths and weaknesses of the major US Airlines... In order to keep this discussion at a high level of objectivity, I thought we'd begin by listing the strategic assets of each major airline...

What is a strategic asset? It could be a set of route authorities that no other airline has (e.g., routes to China or LHR), or a management system that no other airline has (e.g., yield management system or even a corporate manager), or properties and facilities that no other airline has (i.e., gates at LAX or real estate at JFK to expand). In general, it is something that one of the major airlines owns that gives it a competitive edge vis-a-vis the other major airlines. By competitive edge, I mean the strategic asset can be leveraged against another airline's comparable assets to secure market share or to siphon revenue. For instance, American's LHR to Newark route is a strategic asset, because it acts to undermine Continental's flights to Gatwick from Newark.

First and only rule: If you claim that something is a strategic asset and it is not obvious that it is one, you must justify why it is a strategic asset.

I'll get the ball rolling by making the case that for both United and American their routes to London Heathrow (LHR) are a strategic asset. Even if the US and UK agree to a new bilateral, it is unlikely that any other US carrier would be able to get enough slots at LHR to compete on a one to one basis with either American or United...

Okay, the airline with the most toys wins...

TWA/AA's DCA-LAX route

AA's potential to have 25 gates at LGA!

UA & NW's fifth freedom rights from NRT

WN's reputation as the savior for low fares

For DL.....

ATL... probably the world's most fortified hub. The center of our control over the Southeastern U.S. No other region is as dominated by one airline as the deep South is by Delta.

Florida.... Granted, everybody's big here, but Delta has the most market share here, and Florida is our cash cow, generating over 30% of our overall revenue.

UAL's world-wide known brand. Almost everybody on earth knows who United Airlines is. If you were to go up to a person in Australia, India, Asia-some places- and Africa (Random - for example) and ask them who Delta (for example) was, they may or may not know. This is a tremedous asset to UAL. Plus their sheer size and payroll. Nobody can deny that UAL is (currently) the worlds best known airline. "United" is simply a more renound name then others.

Hmmm good topic one of the better ive seen in a while.

TWA JFK-CAI-RUH,
TWA/CO JFK-TLV
Even though all the majors have them, the hanger TWA has at JFK.

DL big advantage is obviously ATL.

And in a month or two AA having 3 big BIG hubs all in a line ORD,STL,DFW!

Since brand recognition of UA was brought up, I wonder which airline is the most recognized around the world. It may be UA; it maybe not. But one sad thing is how airlines' names haven't gotten the recognition they deserve these days. When Pan Am was flying high in the 70s, it ranked top ten in world-wide brand recognition. But nowdays, no airline even ranks in top 75 (according to annual survey done by Interbrand- a respected firm).
BTW, Coke and Microsoft are one-two, respectively.

Arnold, If AA gets TWA/US assets, they will have 25 gates at LGA. Seems like a lot of real estate at that airport.

I read this on the analysts presentation about AA's acquisition of TWA's assets from the www.amr.com

Don't forget about Aeroflot. Of course, it's not what it used to be, but check these flights out - SVO to JFK, IAD, SFO, LAX, ORD, Seattle, and other places all over the world.

United and American's slots into and out of LHR are huge for them.
Also United's presents in NRT.

CO's EWR HUB with its new International Terminal opening the end of the year. And the new Monorail system that will link Manhattan with the airport. That's every New Yorkers dream.

Delta's hub in ATL, but lets remember CO's IAH and AA's DFW hubs have bragging rights in the south as well.

SQ's quality of service. Every airline scrambles every year to keep up with them. And to think they have ONE hub...SIN Changi...and they are from a pretty small island. They still are the best airline in the world some 5 years in a row. Every world airport beggs for them to fly there. All from one airline, from a small island in Indonesia.

And lastly, the Star Alliance Codeshare. All those airlines support each other and their customers. What's a bigger asset than that?

What About Air Canada

Mon Jan 22, 2001 8:28 am

Yes I'll admit that UA has a strong hold on the world of aviation as well as British Airways. I'm sure that if you asked people around the world to write down 5 airlines that they know, and non can be from the counrty where they reside A/C would be on the list. I just look at the Canadian Population.....seems like the world is here. Must be that canadian imagration stuff.

Please don't count out A/C

Thanks

As far as competition with Delta goes, I think Airtran's order for 717s is an asset. I'd much rather fly on a 717 for a cheaper fare than a cramped Delta 737-800, even if I had to drive to another airport (Airtran doesn't fly to HSV).

Midwest Express' reputation for the best domestic service is a definite asset.

While Air Canada is always consistent, I don't think a lot of people think of them as one of the world's global airlines. There good, but they don't get a lot of press.

Who Has What?

Mon Jan 22, 2001 10:51 am

Southwest has a pile of cash and a cost structure everyone wants, plus a whole bunch of 737's.

CO has Houston and Newark, and the best name recognition in Mexico and Central America.

AA has DFW, ORD, MIA and OneWorld, plus some goodies left over from their former ownership of Sabre.

NW has the entire Far East, one of the most restricted destinations in the industry.

DL has Atlanta, but their codeshare alliances are weak.

UA has ORD, DEN, IAD, SFO and the Star Alliance.

TW has... Help me, folks!

Southwest with their niche and the fact that people are willing to drive for hours to save money with them.
