Greek Island Hopping

Fri Jan 19, 2001 9:09 pm

I'm going on a little flying trip around some Greek Islands this summer, taking in Corfu, Kefalonia, Skiathos and Samos (on current plans). I would appreciate any comments anyone has on these airports - especially Skiathos as a commercial pilot friend of mine tells me that one's fun in a 757.

Sorry if this in wrong forum - it's my 1st post here and which forum would be correct is a little vague.

I can't comment on any of those airports, but will you be flying Olympic? That's an experience in itself!!

Whenever I go to Greece (2x a year) I always go to Cephalonia. Very green island. The approach into the airport is straight in from Athens, and passes very nice scenery. Make sure to sit on the RIGHT side of the plane to see a view of paradise. The airport itself is very nice. One terminal, and I believe 3-4 gates. Very nice island in general.

Again very green, I have never been. Many OA pilots mention it is a very hard approach, could anyone comment as to why this would be.

Very bumpy approach whenver I go (as with all Aegean Islands) It is very windy, and rocky. Again one terminal I believe.

Hope this helps, do try to go to Mykonos and Santorini. Those two islands are HEAVEN pure bliss... Smile/happy/getting dizzy

VERY windy, almost to the point of being scary. The airport is situated on a cliff that creates a huge downdraft. The terminal is typical Aegean Architecture

Enjoy your trip... and have fun in my homeland!

Wow, thanks. Actually, my holiday is one on which I will be flying. I'm hiring a small aircraft (exactly what TBC) for 10 days and flying myself. Any pilots with experience of going in/out of these airports would be great to hear from you. And Mykonos sounds fun, might just have to add that to my itinerary.
I've heard more about Skiathos now, seems it's only 5200 ish feet so I guess that would be fun in a 757 or equivalent, what is the minimum runway length for takeoff/landing in these birds?
