SIA Cadet Pilots

Fri Jan 19, 2001 10:35 pm

Hi,

I would like to know any good flying schools in New Zealand. I've received brochures from Ardmore Flying School and International Aviation Academy. They both look good or too good to be true. I'm not sure !! They are pretty cheap compared those in Australia, America and Malaysia ! Will SIA take pilots who have gone for their own flight training in other countries and have pass their conversion test ?

By the way, I'm from Singapore and I want to be an airline pilot. At what age does Singapore Airlines recruit their cadet pilot. If I'm not wrong its 26 / 28 years old ! That's pretty old to start training I feel compared to other carriers like B/A whereby their recruits are as young as 18 when they start training and by the time they are 21 they've got their ATPL and ready to fly !!

Why are there these differences in the other carriers too. Can't they make it as a standard age for recruiting cadet pilot.

SIA will take in ab-initio pilots from the age of 26 up till 32. That is, the company will sponsor your training in Singapore and overseas. You will be required tosign a cond for 6-7 years, if I'm not wrong once you graduate from flight training school as a second officer.

It is my intention to join SQ as a commercial pilot as well, Herman. I wish both of us the best of luck! I'm studying Aerospace Engineering at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) in Australia, and when I graduate at the end of 2002, I will turn 26 in less then 2 months.

I know someone who studied aviation at Oxford Training School in England, and he managed to get a job as an SQ pilot after clocking up enough hours on his ATPL license by flying charter flights out of Seletar airport to regional destinations.

Massey University's (Auckland, NZ) flight training programme is also recognised by SIA, I was informed by them a couple of years ago. Just thought you might want to know that.

Anyway, hope to hear from you again soon.

regards,

Andrew
