Air Jamaica To Start Service To IAH, Den?

Sun Jan 21, 2001 1:07 pm

Go to their website and it says service starts 2001 on the route map. No details otherwise...

Cool. JM hasn't been in Houston in 20 years.

It should be sometime in June barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Will the Denver flight be starting in June also? I imagine that both flights will be on A320's.

I know Houston has been rumored for a while. They have applied, and reapplied, and delayed their services to IAH for quite a while.
May I ask why Denver?

Air Jamaica has no plans to serve DFW, according to their corporate communications department. With IAH only a couple hundred miles away, I'd say there's little chance of seeing them there. Of course you could always connect through IAH....

Well the routes are going to be served by the A320. Your'e correct, they are having problems getting permission for Houston. But they are still striving for a June start up date for Den & Houston. Before that they are expected to acquire an A320 and an A321 as they explore the possibility of more routes.

JM's expansion to these cities out of MBJ continues their trend in developing the hub at MBJ as the main gateway from North America to the Caribbean. The single-aisle Airbus would certainly be the equipment of choice to launch these routes.

BTW, BWIA is also supposed to start service to IAH in September 2001. With their ATL service put on the shelf even before it started one wonders about that service.

BW Has Been At IAD For Six Months Now...

They are thought of as part of the Star Alliance, though I don't think they've formally joined. But who knows? Maybe they can start a beautiful realtionship with CO, as could JM.

I am curious. WHO is holding up the service approval for JM to start their IAH, DEN service? Is it on the US or the Jamaican side, and does that mean AA is somehow involved?

BW has been in IAD for over one year now; that service started in 1999 with a leased 737-700, which has now been replaced with a 737-800. BW also has had a long-running arrangement with CO, including cooperation on frequent flyer rewards and other services. This is likely to be the basis for starting service into IAH (as was the case with UA in IAD).

Air Jamaica applied for IAH-MBJ two years ago and had no trouble getting approval. It took about a week. They re-applied last Thursday, and I expect similar results...where did you hear they're having problems getting approval? The reason they never came was because the company bailed out; no regulatory body was stopping them.

BTW, AJ plans for five weekly A320 services to IAH starting June 7th, subject to change. I was surprised to see DEN on there, but either way they haven't applied for service there yet so nothing is final.

BWIA has had IAH service on their mind since October of 99. I can't wait to finally have them here in October. Their relationship with CO is pretty limited, but IAH is gaining popularity as a caribbean gateway. There's also oil involved. BWIA is set with UA as their American partner (hence IAD), so i don't think their serving IAH is alliance related. As far as I know they still plan to serve ATL. Flight 750, a 737-800 flying POS-BGI-ATL is still on Sabre, operating three time a week.
