What does TWA have that CO could possibly want?

Slots and gates my boy!

While, TWA isn't the largest carrier in the country, it once was, and remnants of that error are still held by TWA, some good (slots, gates at congested airports) some bad (antiquated work rules, old planes etc...).

TWA owns 17 gates at JFK, 7 at SFO, 4 at LGA, 4 at PHL, 2 at DCA, and 2 at BOS.

Additionally,

TWA holds 84 slots at JFK, 51 slots at LGA, and 33 at DCA.

Also, TW has plenty of mech capacity with a large overhaul base in LA that has room for 3 narrowbody planes and 3 widebody planes.

Those Slots Are Going To Be Worth Less...

...as time goes on. AIR-21 is gradually supposed to lift the restrictions at all slot-controlled airports except DCA. However the maintenance base might be a plum, especially for resale. Same with the JFK gates; CO won't need them...

The real value to CAL (which is what they're most likely to get) are TWA's gates at LGA.

CAL needs those gates (which are in the concourse adjacent to CAL's) for their RJ expansion at LGA.

The slots would help their position as well.

AA does not need those gates at LGA,because if UAL buys USair (which is a big part of the AA-TWA deal) then UAL would move out of the main Terminal building at LGA and into Usair's terminal. Thus freeing up UAL's gates for AA.

CAL's EWR-Tel Aviv service is very successful,so I wouldn't be suprised if they went after TWA's JFK-Tel Aviv route to compliment their EWR service.

I don't think they would be interested in any of TWA's gates at JFK,they (CAL) are better off in the new Terminal 4 (where they are now) which will be finished this year or early next.
