Airbus: Northwest Orders 24 A330-300

Mon Jan 22, 2001 3:30 am

Why would Northwest Airlines want 24 A330-300? I know it will replace their DC-10s, but will Northwest make a profit in Europe since UA, AA, Delta, U.S Air,... already have flights to major markets.

Well, Northwest also has flights to major markets in Europe with the DC-10s and has an alliance with KLM. These are strictly REPALCEMENT aircraft, not for expansion. The A330-300 will have lower operating costs than the DC-10-30s, so I imagine they intend to make a profit out of their investment.

The Airbus A330-300's will burn 30% less fuel than the DC-10-30's they are replaceing and the reduction in servicing costs will be massive, in addition will be able to hold far more freight than the DC-10 ever could. These days freight is a very important part of an airlines bottom line.
By replaceing the aircraft one for one NW will save a huge amount of money in the long term.

Think about this....Northwest already has a pile of flights to Europe everday with a large part of the market.... Right now the DC-10's carry enough freight where they dont even need to carry ANY passengers on the planes to make a profit. Imagine with a full load of passengers and the freight packed in... with only two very efficient engines putting out power instead of 3 less efficient ones.
Chicks dig winglets.

Northwest has operated a significant European schedule since 1979.I believe this is earlier than AA,UA,US or DL began service. Cities they fly to include Amsterdam,London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome. Other cities they have flown to in the past include Glasgow, Shannon, Dublin, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Hamburg. They do make a profit flying to Europe already and the new aircraft order will continue that tradition.

The freight issue is very important, as NW loves hauling freight...enough so that they are one of the last U.S Airlines with a designated Cargo fleet (about12 747s)

Also, the planes will carry more passengers and I am sure NW will fill them up. I don't think there are any additional cities planned for the new fleet.

Maintanence costs will be so much lower on the new planes too.

And as we have mentioned 30% less fuel burn.

These will be fine machines and I can't wait to see one in NW colors sitting at the brand new DTW terminal!!!!!

RE: Northwest A330-300: Delivery

Mon Jan 22, 2001 11:38 am

Hello:

When are deliveries to take place ... anyone know?

I was hoping for the 777, but the A330-300 is OK in my book  Smile/happy/getting dizzy I will certainly miss the Dc-10s, as I know we all will.

Thanks
jim
