Will Cathay Pacific Purchase The B 747-400?

Mon Jan 22, 2001 7:40 pm

Cathay has just taken delivery of two brand new B 747-400F I think sometime last year.

Will CX be going for more B 747-400 Pax? Seems that they haven't ordered any since long time ago.

Cathay have now delayed making any new orders due to the slowdown in the us economy.

Anyway I think they will go for big Airbus over big Boeings !!

Well, Cathay Pacific has always been a loyal customer to the B 747 Family and I do believe that the B 747 would be better for them. At least it would be cheaper to keep their fleet to be an all Boeing Jumbo Fleet.

Will they get more of the B 747-400?

Qantas have also been a loyal B747 customer and they bought the A380.

Cathay should really consider the A380 cause A380 is a better deal financially for Cathay and the plane is better then B747X

Oh yes. But it seems that Cathay is more interested in Boeing's Product for large planes.

Well, maybe you are right. We'll see.

However, don't forget that CX is also a pioneering user of the A330-300 and A340-300E.

Given that Airbus wants the A380-800's cockpit designed so A333/A343 pilots can transition over easily, I think given the combination of ease of retraining and CX's desperate need for pax/cargo capacity between HKG and Europe, they will probably order 6-10 A388's with options for 5 more planes.

Too many users overestimate the so called 'better value' of A380. This things hasn't even flown yet and there's no guarantee that it will deliver the promised performances. Launch customers are getting their discounts because they're gambling on the success of this type and if Cathay doesn't get discount on similar level, they should stay away 'til it proves itself in service. There's no need to rush to make decisions on VLA when US economy is pointing south (or maybe it's just a hiccup). A380 won't be selling like a barn-burner like 737 and Cathay won't slip down too many delivery spots if it decided to wait out a few years.

In my opinion we have seen the last of Cathay Pacific ordering passenger 747-400 series aircraft. The 747-400F though could see an order from Cathay in the number of 3-6 airframes. Within the last week, Cathay Pacific delayed its upcoming order on behalf of the United States current economic slowdown. They want to see how the demand on their HKG-USA routes do. Supposedly the order that was delayed/put off was for A330s, A340-600s and A380s. The 777-300 also had a chance of being ordered. Unfortunately no "solid" information was ever leaked  Sad

While I am a Boeing fan, CX in this case doesn't look to be going with them. Chek Lap Kok is one of the few airports that can handle the A380 so airport layout will not be a problem for Cathay. The recent delay could see CX rethink their fleet development. The A380 is a big jump, and empty A380s due to an U.S. slowdown or any slowdown anywhere are not going to make money. In my opinion CX would be better served by ordering the 747-400LR and seeing how that capacity increase helps them. The A380 will be needed, but don't over purchase on capacity!

F.Y.I.: Right before the Asian recession Cathay was ready to place an order for A330, A340, 747-400s and 777s. They put this off and totally redid what their fleet needs were. I believe that a fleet of 747-400s, 747-400LR, 777-200, 777-300s, A330-300s, A340-300, and A380-800s would be a good mix. The A380 could be placed on routes where much more capacity than the 747-400 is needed. The 747-400LR could go on 747-400 routes where a slight increase of capacity is needed. The 747-400s could be placed on inter-asian routes where demand warrants an aircraft larger than the A330/777-300. Excess 747-400s could also be converted into freighters.
